The problem with The Avengers is that the heroes vary too much in power. It's like, yeah, there's Iron Man is flying through a worm-hole to deliver a nuke to the alien's grill, and there's Black Widow reloading her little pea shooter.
Also, Loki just isn't an intimidating or dynamic antagonist. Never once did I feel any real danger from his punk ass.
