It's not that they were giving free coins, it's that BCC came from BTC. That means that the date BCC "forked" (spawned from BTC), it's entire future from that point was unique. But it's history before that point was identical to BTC (because it was copied from BTC).
It's an odd concept, but it means that everything that had happened to BTC before BCC spawned had also happened to BCC. So...if you have previously allocated 1.5 BTC, it means you had also allocated 1.5 BCC. It then just became a matter of "claiming" that BCC (which was a bit convoluted, but easy enough).
Ya, there is all sorts of politics going on with both sides. It seems like BTC and BCC have a loose inverse relationship, though. They're both slowly rising, but, as one rises sharply the other falls. Obv, since I didn't sell either, I sorta want them both to just go to the moon.
