Default Computer Security

I spent about three hours tonight trying to get rid of some fucking malware that I got through a website. It wasn't anything too malicious. It would just run a program that "scanned" my hard drive, told me I had a shit ton of viruses and shit like that, and recommended I purchase its full version for like $60. It also closed just about any program I opened (firefox, forefront, defender, etc). This made it a huge pain in the ass to delete. I assume that main purpose of this program was to get me to buy their scam bullshit, and they would proceed to empty my bank account. I had to reboot in safe mode and that took care of it. Needless to say, I'm a bit concerned about my security since this breach.

I'm running Microsoft Forefront, which obviously doesn't seem to be doing that great of a job. I downloaded Malwarebytes, but I only got the free version which gives you one scan. The full version has a reasonable price tag of about $20. I am definitely willing to pay this price, but before I do, I figured I'd ask you guys what's good and if there is anything better and/or free.

What do you run for computer security?

Fuck security, just don't click shit.

For scans, malwarebytes (really, only one scan for free now? lame) or superantispyware. Both have saved me.

^Agreed. I've probably spent as much time as anyone going to going to shady sites. I've never had antivirus stuff installed or have ever had any problems with virus's.

Just keep your software up to date and avoid opening files called "cp.exe" no matter how tempting it is.

There are tons of sites out there that have pop-ups that are meant to look very official and some are even made to look as though they came from a program already installed on your computer. The above advice of "Fuck security, just don't click shit." is very solid. If you follow that, you'll be golden. All you'll need to do is use some antivirus shit here and there. I use AVG Free Edition. Not sure if there is something better out there, but I haven't had much of anything happen to my computer.

Just don't get fooled into thinking you've got tons of viruses or "malware" just because some pop-up said so. That is what those companies are banking on. They play on the fears of people that aren't very tech savvy. If you download anime-cat porn and go to those more unsavory websites, your chances of getting some sort of virus increase quite a bit.

The thing is, I didn't click shit. Which is why I was so cluster fucked when this started happening. Granted, I feel like fucking shit (and even worse yesterday) but I really don't think I clicked on a god damn thing. I just went to this message board and all of a sudden all hell broke loose.

Edit: and the message board wasn't for child-porn. It was a forum for character builds for mass effect 2, the video game.

For enough security to not be totally fucked, I'd recommend Microsoft Security Essentials. It auto updates along w/windows updates and has a small footprint.

And, of course, when your computer tells you it has an update to install, let it install it. If your computer doesn't tell you, then change your settings so that it checks regularly.

Ah yes, the updates were kind of piled up. I had 74 updates to install last night.

I was burned one too many times and got Norton. Now my tender bottom is protected at all times.

I use the free anti virus that is provided by Ball State. We used to get Symantec for free, and it was awesome. Recently, it seems as though the partnership with Microsoft has taken precedence, and they offer this shit program by Microsoft called Forefront (which to me seems exactly the fucking same as Windows Defender that comes with Vista).

I used Karpasky (or someshit like that) back when I used windows. It worked pretty well. I'd also run ad-aware and spybot to identify the problems. Then I'd go into the registry editor and manually delete it. In the olden days, I wasn't above wiping a hard drive clean and starting over.
