I think it's inevitable that (as long as we don't expand civilization beyond Earth) there will be only 1 currency. Currencies have a big network effect Network effect - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia . The US dollar is the closest we've gotten to this possibility. It is both the world's most used reserve currency Reserve currency - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, and the most popular currency of "dollarization" Dollarization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Dollarization is the process where one country literally uses the currency of another for it's official currency. Ecuador, for example, trades in US dollars.

But the US dollar is losing reputation and may have peaked a bit too early. If the internet and globalization had been around 200 years earlier, it's very probable that the whole world would have just used the US dollar.

Regardless, it seems very likely in my oppinion, that there will be a currency someday which is universally trusted (and thus has a strong network effect), which will be chosen as the new reserve currency, and will be the subject of much more dollarization than the US dollar. Or perhaps we form a giant currency union Currency union - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Who knows how we get there, it just seems to me very likely that we do.
