Thought we had a thread like this, but couldn't find it.

This is a documentary from 2006 from the heir of the Johnson and Johnson company. Makes for an interesting perspective as well as access to the actual, real thought process of some of the richest people in America.

It really is interesting to see how they think, and how active of a role cognitive dissonance plays in their everyday lives. I would highly recommend it.

I saw this a few months ago and wasn't really impressed. Had a few funny moments but was mostly aimless drivel.

Yea, I liked the Liberia one better.

Bulgarians are some of the best criminals; the modern Mafia there was formed by former wrestlers, literal Olympic style wrestlers, who were bodyguards for high profile people, then decided "fuck it, we will just take over." Most of the Heroin in Europe goes through Bulgaria at some point.

I disagree that it was aimless, it just took a little bit more thinking to connect points than many other documentaries who are done by more experienced documentary directors.

Also, I think it was kind of the point of the documentary to highlight the parroted drivel that a lot of these very wealthy people say when asked the hard questions about the economy. The only one that really made any sort of sense about the situation was that young Asian dude who was driving around the Lambo.

The Chicago thing is pretty misleading; he talks about how when a project goes condo people lose their home. First, the people aren't thrown out on the street, they still get free/reduced price housing (which brings the question of ownership into question to begin with), and they get the fuck out of a South Side project building. Projects like the ones in the movie have been an almost universal failure, I've seen it in person, they are not pleasant places. Closing down the projects is a net positive, hell it is almost a total positive.

I think Milton Friedman and the Kinkos guys make a lot of sense, and on the other side I think the issues raised about lobbying for subsidies is also very good. Overall though, Friedman is right, the government is, in the end, elected, and until people stand up and actually vote people who they feel are being bought out of office, I don't think they should be criticizing anybody other than those politicians.

US-China Institute :: news & features :: assignment: china - opening up

It was 1979. The U.S. and China had just established diplomatic relations. For the first time since the Communists took power in 1949, the Chinese government allowed American journalists to be based in Beijing. Assignment: China, "Opening Up" is their story.

Prison slaves - Slavery: A 21st Century Evil - Al Jazeera English

China is the world's factory, but does a dark secret lurk behind this apparent success story?

Awesome documentary, and only 25 minutes long.

Enjoyed this.

Cliffs: China sends its citizens to slave labor camps for things like government dissent, drug use, or practicing a non-state approved religion. Goods made in these camps (examples: Christmas lights, Homer Simpson slippers) are sold to Western world.

Great documentary on North Korea. The guy is a bit weird, but funny, and it's very well made for this kind of documentary, and I feel like it's much more complete than the Vice Guide one. A lot of music, humorous anecdotes, funny way of presenting in general.

For real. I couldn't decide if I felt sorry for him or not.

In the end, I decided I did. Even though he's a disgusting, perverted, murderer, it's ultimately not his fault. Sucks they didn't treat him.
