Rhodes chosen as all-star coach

Team goals have always been Al Rhodes' focus as one of the premier high school basketball coaches in Indiana.

Along the way, though, individual accolades have come.

Rhodes, a Penn High School graduate who carved his niche in Hoosier hoops history with a tremendous run at Warsaw, has been accorded a national honor by being named the head coach for the Boys West team in the McDonald's All-American Basketball Classic set to be played in South Bend March 30.

"Every basketball coach in Indiana dreams about winning a state championship, and I was fortunate enough to do that (in 1984),'' said Rhodes, who's now in his second year of rebuilding the program at Logansport. "To get things turned around here, that would be another career highlight.

"Beyond those two things, a chance to coach in the McDonald's All-American Game is a great honor. It's just about the only thing I haven't done.''

Rhodes will be matched against another Hoosier legend, veteran Lawrence North coach Jack Keefer, who will lead the Boys East team. The girls game will feature Anna V. Jackson of Jackson, Miss., heading the East team and Kelly Flynn of South Sioux City, Neb., in charge of the West.

"When you are selecting a coach for the game, you look for someone who has class, style and is a credit to the game,'' said Morgan Wooten, a very popular and successful coach from DeMatha Catholic High School in Washington, D.C., who is the chairman of the selection committee. "There are just so many, we'll never get to them all.

"Al's name first popped up a couple years ago. Sometimes it takes that long to finally get them in the game. This is a great opportunity and a great fit for South Bend. (Notre Dame head coach) Mike Brey (a former assistant for Wooten) thought a lot of (Rhodes). He spoke highly of him. When you get the word from Mike, you know you're getting the goods. He knows what we're looking for.''

"I told Morgan that Al Rhodes is the Morgan Wooten of Indiana,'' Brey said. "I've watched him at camps for many years, the biggest compliment you can give is that I'd want my son to be under his watch. A lot of a coach's reputation is determined by how he's thought of by other coaches and about 90 percent around the state will say this is a well-deserved honor.''

Rhodes, who utilizes a very disciplined approach to basketball during the season, is comfortable with the adjustment to an all-star format, which requires a bit more freedom. He coached in the McDonald's Capital Classic in 1988 and has been a regular at the Five-Star Basketball Camp for many years.

"The key is to talk to the players right away about the importance of having the ability to make your teammates better,'' Rhodes said. "Everybody on the roster was probably the leading scorer on their high school team. But, we have to have somebody bring the ball down, set the picks, play defense. Those things are all important in a game like this.''

"You need people to weed the garden and polish the floor,'' Wooten said. "The guys that don't play as a team will be the ones who go home with a loss.''

"A good coach is going to be able to adjust his style to any situation,'' Brey said. "Al has no problem with that.''

Rhodes doesn't seemed bothered by the presence of the ESPN cameras for the live telecast of the game. Wardrobe selections won't be difficult.

"I'll leave that to my wife,'' he said. "Or, maybe I'll put my assistant, Pete Smith, in charge of that.''

Smith, a former assistant under Rhodes at Warsaw and head coach at Penn, is now starting a basketball program at the new Guerin Catholic High School in the Indianapolis area.

"Pete's always been a sharp dresser,'' Rhodes said. "That will be right up his alley.''

Rhodes will have bigger fish to fry that day.

Al Rhodes has been associated with high school basketball in the state of Indiana for the past 29 years, including 24 of those as a head coach.
He has compiled a record of 410-149 over that span. As the coach of Warsaw High School, he led his team to an astonishing 49 total championships. Most notably were the 14 sectional, seven regional, four semistates and one state championship (1984). Rhodes has an overall 68-22 (75.6 percent) record in tournament play. Over the years he has won numerous Coach of the Year honors, including eight Northern Lakes Conference Coach of the Year awards.
Rhodes also coached in the McDonald's Capital Classic in 1988. In 1996, he was elected as President of the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.
Some of Rhodes' other accomplishments include being an assistant coach for the Bahamian National Team, being inducted into the Five-Star Basketball Camp Hall of Fame and starting his own Al Rhodes Basketball School.
He is in his second year at Logansport High School.
