Perfect example. A basic, common-sense/rational (but unwritten) road rule that an amazing number of people dont' regularly perform. I flip my hazards on automatically at this point whenever I have to hit my brakes hard --- if nothing else, so I don't get rear-ended. But it's also a very courteous thing to do so others behind me don't have to slam on their brakes like I just had to.
