OK, soon I will be purchasing a new computer, and getting a mac has crossed my mind. But lately I've realized there are alot of little things that make life easier on a PC, than on a OS 9 system.

So my question is, to anyone whom may know, how much better is Mac OS X compared to 9?

Can you see the different colors of member's names on nubblies? Does it save the login cookie everytime until you delete it?

Are there any other "simple" things, that make life easier while using it?

Thanks for your time sirs.

Dirty Harry-

I will disown you if you buy a MAC. Now if that's something you do not mind taking place, then I say, enjoy your MAC.

PCs rape MACs in every way possible.

No, you can't see the name colours, which is unfortunate. This is obviously IE's fault for designing a piss-shit thing. I'm not sure what deleting the cookies is all about... so I can't answer that question for you. OS X is a shit-piss-load better than 9 though. I can hardly fucking stand using a computer that has 9 now.

If you want a good pc, I'll keep my eyes open for a good deal from Dell. How much are you looking at spending? I have about $500 wrapped up in mine and it's everything I'll need for quite awhile...plus it's a Dell, which means the support/warranty is ungodly...

exactly they are so simplistic, that people find no use for them, and dont even bother getting on them.

I'm seriously considering getting mac for college. I've used Titan's a considerable amount, and it's a shitload better than all the PC's I've used.
I think most people just don't like macs because they use them once, aren't familiar with them, so they just say fuck it...

I'm using OS 9 right now, and everything I've heard and seen would suggest that X is above and beyond any other platform out there. In IE, you can't see the name colors, but you might be able to in some of the other browsers... Titan, have you tried the Safari browser from Apple yet... and iTunes 4?

Dirty Harry, I'd highly suggest getting a mac, you can be incredibly productive with one, there are less headaches all around, it's just better. I myself plan on grabbing one before I head of to school, probably an iMac or eMac, maybe a Powerbook if I can gather the cash.

No I don't. I wish I did, but you have to buy the latest version of OS X in order to use those, which I don't have the cash for as of now.

man, i dunno i am just flabbergasted. There isnt many programs on Macs that you cant get on PC. PC has much more software for it, including a vast amount of computer games. Not to mention things like edonkey that let you get practically anything you can imagine for free. You can run multiple operating systmes on a PC (i have both Windows XP Pro, and 98 and i'm in the process of getting Linux), and upgrades are easy. Mac's are also harder to program for than PC (just look at the lack of software), and as dumb as it may sound no floppy.

I dunno, i've had my PC over a year now and havent had any troubles with it at all. I've had it crash maybe 6-7 times, and only one of those times was because of the actual operating system fucking up.

I have a GameCube, I don't need computer games. That and the fact that I'm at college.

I get everything I need through Download.com and Limewire.

I can run OS X and OS 9 at the same time.

I don't program my Macintosh. It already has what I need.

What the fuck am I going to need a floppy disk for when I have plenty of CD's, Zip Disks, E-mail, and a fucking CFS account?

I don't see why you need to feel justified in trying to prove that PCs are a better alternative for everyone.

Quite unnecessary.
You see, this summer, I'm getting what some call a "job". With this "job" I receive "money". Once I receive some of this "money" it allows me to "purchase" things. When you "purchase" things like this it creates this thing called the "economy".

First off take no offense to this. You're a diehard Mac user, and I’m diehard PC user. So I’m going to make this friendly, I know you pretty well in RL so it’s not my goal to make you angry, or to turn this into a knife fight.

First off if he is going to choose between a PC and a MAC i feel that my post was to justify as to why he should go with a PC. Yes for some users such as you Macs are the better way to go, but for others it probably isn’t and the post was to justify that fact.

I would say that there is a good majority of people that play games on their computers at college, and PC the obvious choice to do so.

Limewire is good for audio, and that’s about it. I've been looking it over, and overall i'm not that impressed. Its speeds are good, but when it comes to context edonkey takes the cake.

For example a simple search on both edonkey, and Limewire for Jackass the movie. (i went with movies because that was more of a neutral ground, and something more people would be into) The searches returned 397 matches for edonkey, and Limewire returned roughly 50.

Yes you can run OS X and 9, but that’s about all you can run, if you're the type of person that needs to run multiple operating systems for various tasks, then yes go with PC, if not then the issue carries no weight in your computer decision.

Titan, i figured you weren’t the type to program with Macintosh (not many are), this was aimed at the software developers. Easier programmability= more software= more variety.

Floppy's i agree need to be replaced with Zip Drives as the standard drive, however
this probably wont happen anytime soon. When you need to setup computers, networks, routers, etc, floppy drives are great for transferring needed material.

As for me downloading OS X for you, just an offer I wanted to save you a few bucks. But please tell me do you legally own 100% of everything on your computer including your music? I am guessing no, it's the same principal as stealing music, just with software. It’s not like stealing an OS that is on less than 9% of the worlds PCs is going to destroy our economy.

That was about 90% fairbeared.

The fact that it can only hold 1.44 MB... seriously... with 80 G hard drives all around the place, that's ridiculous.

Nope.
The "illegal" stuff on my computer is music.
30% of my music is the "illegal" kind.

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by buckeye:

Seriously though, I don't steal music. I borrow it. Honestly, I just downloaded the whole Vanessa Carlton album a couple weeks ago and I'm buying it when I get into town this weekend. That's how 70% of my mp3 list is of the "legal" variety. I borrow 'til I buy. And though this has nothing to do with this thread, it really should be addressed. You can't say that piracy has not had any effect. The music business is in shambles. You have Sony producing CDs that you can't play on your computer at the same time that they're producing mp3 technology crap. The prices of CDs are ridiculously high because corporate fuckheads like Sony shitting their pants that they're not going to make any money (right). Then you've got companies like... hmm... Sony who are afraid to give perfectly respectable and amazing (and popular!) bands like Incubus their fair share in record sales because they're as scared as a little rabbit in a dog pound. If people really fucking cared about the godamn music scene then they could at least try to buy some CDs. But they're too stupid too realize that if the market fails then there won't be any music We've already seen that the quality has gone down the drain.

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by buckeye:

Really, is that completely true?

Anyway, forgive my assumptions in the former post. I didn't mean to interceed on you attempting to be a fairbear to Dirty, it's just that I'm fucking sick and tired of people saying that Macs are shit just because they don't like them. It's absolutely fucking ridiculous.

Buckeye, I'm sure you don't know the extent of the Mac's capabilities or the range of programs for it, simply because, as you put it, you're a 'diehard pc user'. I just doubt you've really used a Mac in depth, otherwise your wouldn't be so 'flabbergasted'. I've used both a good deal, and unless you're working to design programs for PC's, there really isn't a good arguement for PC's. Macs excell beyond PC's in so many ways though.

Overall, I'm still abou 55/45 though. It'll depend on what company offers a better deal at the time I get one for college.

Yeah, I'll be honest...I'll take a PC anyday over a Mac...but I really don't have a reason for it other than I haven't used a Mac since 6th grade. Titan, you've made reasonable defenses as to why the PC isn't better than the Mac...but I'm genuinely curious as to why the Mac is better than the PC. I'm not posting this because I'm going to write up a big long rebuttal or anything...I just don't know anything about Macs. I mean, I know they're used a lot for graphics/video editing...but, even there, I'm not really sure why.

To say that macintoshs cannot run anything compared to PCs would be completely misguided.

In fact, macintoshs now run every kind of really important, useful, necessary software that PCs run.

Now, if you're refering to some shitty ass program that some dickhead made and put on their website, then I guess PCs can run more than macs, but those programs are less than necessary.

Office, IE, Outlook Express, Warcraft III, Diablo II, Ultima Online, Everquest...etc

Yeah, all are on the mac, too.

So in my personal opinion, software is not a problem with the mac.

Diablo 2 came out 2 full years after the PC release....

games like Unreal, Age of Empires, Starcraft, Final Fantasy VII never made it to the MAC, i could go on but i wont. If you have any type of gaming interest the Mac is not the way to go.

I got Starcraft and Brood War for the Mac at the end of 1999. Diablo 2 was simulataneously released on both platforms, and Unreal has been on the Mac for years. Age of Empires, AOK and it's expansion have all made their way to the Mac as well. Not sure about FF7 though...

most major releases are simultaneos on both Mac and PC these days, we might be only 5-10 percent of the market, but Mac users usually have a bit more money to burn... and an audience of millions of potential users is foolish to ignore.

My automatic software updater just alerted me to iTunes 4, evidently now I don't need the new OS to get i (yay). Now the icon is green (yay). No doubt the best part of iTunes is the fact that I can have a separate equalization for every song... wow... now I can have artwork for every song... damn... shit! I can put the BPM's of the song in... sweet... that will help me catalogue my Prodigy songs.
