For those of you uninformed, I'm about to finish a masters degree in conducting (music) and am constantly looking for inspiration and new music to perform. At the same time, I'll often come across an amazing performance by all levels of musicians. This thread is to expose you to some things that I consider pretty awesome.

First, here is a performance by one the best (if not THE best) youth orchestra in the world. The Venezuela Youth Orchestra provides musical opportunities to some VERY poor regions of the country. Music is all they have, thus this pyramid style of orchestras have been created. The top group is the one performing below. From Leonard Bernstein's Symphonic Suite from West Side Story, here is Mambo!

Leonard Bernstein's family just donated the contents of his personal office to Indiana University. Among the items is a conductors stool that was given to LB by the Vienna Symphony that had previously been owned by Johannes Brahms. Apparently they (IU) are going to set his studio up someplace on campus as if he never left.... so if you're needing some inspiration, seems like a good place to visit.

Little info here, there are conductors that get videotaped, then submit them to the composer. He picks his choice and then people from around the world sing their part, following the conductor and all the videos are then played together to create this choir.

Do the auditioning conductors conduct along with a given recording, or do they conduct it however they'd please to? Who is this conductor, do you know?

I do not know this specific conductor, but in his conducting audition (same one used in the actual performance) he has a choir singing. I would guess this to be some high school choir or perhaps a lab choir at a university for conducting practice.

Another gem from The Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra. From the same performance as the OP, this is one of the darkest and most energetic performances I've ever heard. Conductor is a pure genius and musicians are beyond amazing. A special note about this group, is they double many wind instruments to give a more striking flare to performances. They surely have mastered this craft.

i never gave orchestra much thought until i saw elton john @ radio city with the harlem boys choir and the julliard/royal acad of music joint orchestra perform. shit was wild.
