EXPRESSIONS FROM PATRONS - Mr. Jeremy Gerber, apatron and teacher at Northridge High School, addressed the school board
regarding the food policy on school buses. Mr. Gerber is the Science Olympiad coach and stated their meets are usually all-day
events which are held multiple hours away from Middlebury. He indicated last year weather situations arose (ice & snow) which
caused students to go without eating supper until 9:30 p.m. (after they returned to Middlebury). Mr. Gerber understands why the
food policy is in force and was asking if acompromise or flexibility to the policy could be approved for long road trips. Mr. Black
thanked him for his comments.

PRESENTATION BY SCIENCE OLYMPIAD ROBOTS - Jeremy Gerber, Science Olympiad Coach, explained the team had won the
State competition recently but could not use those robots in the National competition. They had to build another robot for the
National competition which is being held in Madison, WI, tomorrow, May 18th. The team built a robot which has to knock
another robot out of bounds (of a designated area) at the National tournament. This competition is asixty team event, divided
into groups of 10 and the top 2 out of the group of ten go on to the finals. Team members Joe Savage and Jordan Perks
brought two robots they built to the meeting and demonstrated how the tournament would work. Board members and the
audience were excited to see how the robots "battled" each other. Board members wished the team luck in tomorrow's
tournamen

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD SUMMER CAMP - Mr. Jeremy Gerber, NHS Science Olympiad Coach, requested approval of asummer Science
Olympiad camp for elementary students. This camp would be available for 3rd
- 6
th
graders and be held at the high school.
Cost would be approximately $100 to $125 per student. Mr. Conner said this camp is a real positive step for a couple of
reasons, it gives kids something to do in the summer and the monies come back to help the high school program. We have a
super Science Olympiad program. Mr. Gerber said he has quite a few activities planned for the kids and he thinks he can keep
the cost at around $100. Mr. Souder asked if Mr. Gerber has any feelers if there is interest at all. Mr. Conner said he did
share this with principals at the buildings and they were positive about this program. Mrs. Merrick asked about staffing - will he
be the only adult teaching? Mr. Gerber said there will be 3 adults leading the activities with his SO students helping. There are
no salaries for Mr. Gerber or his assistants. They are all donating their time to do this summer camp. Mr. Black questioned
having 7th
&8th
grade students included in the camp? Mr. Gerber said they are going to be breaking out into groups of 3
rd
&4
th
graders together and 4th
& 5 graders together. After he gets one year under his belt, he would like to expand to include older
students. Mrs. King asked if this was just offered to students at our school corporation. Mr. Gerber has no problems with accepting students not from Middlebury. He would like students from our school corporation first, but doesn't have a problem
accepting others. Mr. Black questioned how we would handle that with our extra-curricular programs (summer sports
programs)? Mr. Conner said we only have Middlebury students in our summer sports programs because there is no charge for
facilities. Student tuition transfers are allowed to attend these camps, but not students outside our district. Mr. Black moved and
Mrs. Merrick seconded a motion to approve the Science Olympiad Summer camp as presented. The motion was approved with
avote of 5-0.
