This summer, I was driving down the main street in my hometown, which has a population of around 25,000. To my right, I see about 10 police cars, a 20 foot long streak of blood and debris, a wrecked motorcycle, and a corpse. I simply turned my head back to the road and said, "Owned."

The internet has inured me to the most garish, outlandish shit on Earth, and I thank it for that.

Does anyone else have a similar experience?

Yeah, the internet has definitely desentitized the shit out of me. With sites like rotten.com how can it not? I can't decide if this is a good or bad thing.

I consider myself very jaded, in regards to a lot of different things and I'm really not a fan of it.

One that is very noticable to me over the past couple of years has been the value of money and regarding poker. I used to get pumped winning a small $5 buy-in with about 8-10 people, winning 40-50 bucks was awesome. Now its not a big deal, if I have a win of a +$100, its not a big deal at all, I had a +315 night in 45 mins just last week, and I was happy about it, but it wasn't a big deal, I also know that I can lose 100 bucks in a sitting, and it doesn't phase me a bit. It's just like "yeah, that sucks, I just lost a hundred bucks," but its not anything monumental.

Overall in life I often feel that not much affects me, I often think of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" as a good description.

I wish I could go back to not being jaded and have the amusement of a little kid very often in life.

i'm extremely jaded.
my brother is a medic and calls to tell me about various runs he has throughout the day.

one day while i was at work he called to tell me about a guy who was fixing something under his big truck....
he had his gf get in the car and start it so that he could hear how it sounded. she did, then proceeded to put it into drive and run him over.
my bro told me that the guys insides were basically coming out his ass. all i did was laugh and say "natural selection at its finest"
people at work now think i am heartless...

another time he called me to say some guy had committed suicide in his minivan via bugbomb... my reply to that was.. "now they can sell the vehicle knowing that it is critter free".... and then i gave the guy a 10 for ingenuity

I hate to resurrect a thread that has gone to hell, but I felt it was necessary.

Sometimes I feel ultra jaded, like I have no soul. Very little bothers me and I have trouble caring about much of anything. The internet is not to blame, but I sure as hell couldn't have gotten this far without it. Some people might see me as insensitive.. but I don't think I deserve that label. Insensitive seems more like a conscious decision. I think desensitized would be more fitting because its an unwanted side effect that I never planned for.

I recently had a few glimmers of hope, though. The first happened a few weeks ago. I was watching Futurama with one of my roommates and the episode was about Fry's dog. In short, Fry had the option of cloneing his dog. He chose not to because he felt his dog lived a full life and it would be selfish bring him back. Then there was a montage with sad music showing his dog waiting for him to come back.. for something like 10 years. This honestly made me feel sad. I remember saying, "That's fucking depressing."

The other was when I was watching the animal planet. It was some kind of veterinary show. Some woman brought in her dog. I'm not sure what was wrong with it, but it was very sick and it wasn't responding to any type of treatment. So the vet convinced her to put the dog down. But here's what got me.. they showed it. The woman was present and said she wanted to hold the dog while they administered the phenobarbitol. So I watched as this dog died in the arms of this woman. She was crying and rocking the dog back and forth.

This shit got to me as well. I actually felt tears welling up. What I don't understand is how animals can effect me so much while humans don't matter one bit to me. I can watch Trauma: Life in the E.R. all day and not be phased at all. But when it comes to animals, I have trouble watching it.
