Alright, so what the hell is the law on gambling? I don't understand. People are allowed to hold poker tournaments in our lobby here at BSU that cost money, but they are alright because they give prizes. However, if we were caught in one of our tournaments over in the Noyer study lounge, it would be grounds for expulsion.

What is the difference here? Is it that they are giving prizes instead of money? Well we're giving prizes too, it's just in the form of money. Would it be alright if we simply gave out gift certificates for the same amount as we would give out for their prize money?

I would like to hear your opinions, but more than that I was hoping that someone could find out the law. UB, you're a criminal justice major, could you possibly ask one of your teachers. Or Lethal, you dad is a damn lawyer, he would have to know. Anyways, give input, and if you really know, tell us what the law is.

Are the games that are held in your lobby school sanctioned? I find that that makes all the difference in so many instances.

Such as how me and my friends usually play capture-the-flag in the main building here on campus, but we have to make sure that we don't get caught by the patrolling security guard. Thing is, on the 4th floor of this building is a school sanctioned Millikin Gaming Association that has a role-playing game where they all pretend that they are vampires and sometimes run around naked. I'm not shitting you folks.

I have no idea how they got school sanctioned, but I think it had something to do with lying.

Chuck makes a good point on the sanctioning.

And as far as I know gambling is illegal in any form except in Atlantic City and parts of Nevada. Also on boats for Indians. I don't think the gift certificates would be a way to get around the problem Trout. Just give out IOUs

I want to know what defines gambling. If you just pay to play poker and then there is a prize for the winner, i don't think that's considered gambling.

I do know that when you play for money it is illegal. You could even get arrested for it if they wanted to. I don't know about the prize thing, but I sent my father an email asking for some info on the situation.

gambling- 1. To take place in a game which players bet or wager 2. To make a bet or wager. 3.to risk losing something in trying to gain something else.

Take these definitions and use them for your search of the meaning Trout.

Well what the hell is considered betting or wagering?

Lethal, God bless you. Thank you for this. I have been wondering about this for a very long time.

it seems poker for no money fits that definition...

Also, on Native American reserves, casinos are legal, as the gov't doesn't control that land.

Lethal, do we have an update on the status? I would really like a legal standpoint on this instead of some Nubblites that are just assuming stuff.
