We need teachers, and we need good ones. Teaching shouldn't be a shit job.
But teaching is a shit job, so it attracts idealists (not bad) or shit employees who are attracted to a shit job(bad). But you won't get the steller employees. Who would waste 4 years of college education and the rest of their lives to work such a shit job? Probably not the guy who could walk into a top law firm in Washington, the kid with the work ethic to do 2 years on Wall Street and move on the Harvard Business School, or the tech guru who moves to Cali to work for Google. To the most skilled in our labor pool, teaching is just so much below them. So I can't feel bad for the people who work so hard to accept such a shit job, they should know it's shit.

This is entirely different from saying that teaching should be a shit job. I think it should be a very much non-shit job. A high paying and competitive industry. Because, as the economists say, education has "postive externalities."

I'm going into the teaching profession for a bit different reasoning than most. I am doing it to change the scope of how music is taught from grades 7-12. Once achieved (I expect it to take 10-15 years) I will move on to the collegiate sector with the same mission. But being a high school band director has quite a different time commitment than most other teachers.

As far as teachers complaining about shit pay, I also have one word for them: PENSION. There are very few jobs left that provide a pension when you retire, especially without putting your life on the line. Not to mention they an STILL INVEST in IRAs / 401Ks AND after they become tenured they have almost absolute job security. This isn't even mentioning the two months off in the summer or the time off around Christmas.

Not sure if that's true in all places. I think many states have their teachers in a statewide retirement system that takes place instead of social security. They would pay into the retirement system instead of SS and would get one over the other. In order to get both one would have to pay into both. Not sure if the schools contribute to whatever it is the use as an alternative to the 401(k).

Still, hard to bitch about part time pay for part time work.

Don't forget that professors with doctorates must be published annually to keep their status. It still takes quality to be published and they are doing other things other than just sitting in a classroom shooting the shit with students.
