No, fuck them.
This is another thing that pisses me off about some places in England, there's a minimum wage for a reason, most places don't tip, some do. Why am I expected to tip at some restaurants, and not others? Case in point is http://www.toby-carvery.co.uk/ you go up and serve your own food.. and tip for doing so? |

I voted yes. But in the UK, no.

I'd take a pass if there's a $4 fee. Fucking socialists. I'm a fantastic tipper, so service industry workers everywhere should get pissed when their place of employment builds in the tip for them. Leave me to my own devices, and the pimply-faced motherfucker gets $5 every time.

I really think tipping should be optional and have a direct link to service given, I understand the delivery fee, but this should include paying the wages of the deliverer.

Nice 'tar, Dent.
I worked for Papa Johns and Dominoes when I was younger, and I say yes, you absolutely tip your driver. Not only do the drivers usually help make your pizza, they also bring it to your doorstep. Often times the store won't give you enough money per run to cover your gas - for example, I think they paid us .50 cents for every delivery to cover for gas. Plus, think of all the extra miles you put on your vehicle. Tips help. Deliver charges are bullshit. It's just a way for the employer to put more burden on the customer. They squeeze more money out of you, and manage to screw their drivers over in the process by making the customer feel less generous. |

Well then why tip a waitress? She serves you more, but combined with helping to make the pizza, making sure they get all of their items (soda, bread sticks, etc,) and driving out to your house, I would say the drive does almost as much as the waitress. This question is under the premise that there is no, or little, delivery charge.

I tip waitresses based on their attentiveness to me. Waiters tend to go out of their way to be extra helpful and tend to my needs. They could very easily not say shit to me, not bring me a new drink just as I'm finishing my old one, etc. Delivery drivers do the minimum their job requires. Waiters (the ones who want big tips) strive to go above and beyond. The ones who don't, suck. They usually end up not making a ton of tips.

Thx for shedding light on this repug. I really was not sure if the delivery charge (or any portion) actually went to the driver. The waitress analogy is a bit different. Some places include the gratuity by fixing it in the price or tacking it on automatically for larger tables. In this situation one generally knows where they stand.
While I don't think it's the customer's responsibility to ensure that the wait staff is properly compensated, it is the game played over here. I much prefer the Euro system where tax and service is included. |

But compulsary tips are also bullshit, a price should include it being delivered to you, if it doesn't then you should have the option of going and getting it yourself. Also, im pretty sure the majority of europe tips.

The service workers in Australia don't work on tips either but ironically enough performed better. Their incentive was to keep their job and treat everybody equally. They didn't have the favoritism for high tipping customers that we experience here in America. I liked it better there when it came to gratuity.

In a crowded bar, why should I have to tip/pay an extra $20 to avoid having some guy just walk in and drop a large tip to get to the front of the line. Plus, bartenders tend to snub service in favor of those who are big tippers. I find this an absolute waste of money just to get some simple service that a one-armed monkey could perform.

I'll not say that Euro service is better in an apples to apples comparison. Not at all. I guess it's also probably not accurate to say all European countries work the same. God knows that Spain and the benelux countries are totally different from one another and so forth. And the U.K. seems to me to be it's own world. I tried to move to Spain a few years back but they wouldn't let me. Yeah, there's a few differences. Any place with a Michelin star or tying to get one will have exceptional service like a comparable place here. At a simple lunch bistro, you order, get your stuff and leave. No such thing as free drink refills and if you do want something, you gotta get pushy. Same with nicer hotels, have stars and you want for nothing. Hotels where the bathroom is "down the hall" not so much. The service in the U.S. at a lot of places sucks ass as well. I dread going to a large "family friendly" chain like On the Border. Typically, I get some braces wearing high school ditz who pretty much is more interested in socializing with her friends who work there or visit. So my glass doesn't get refilled anyway unless I pushy.

In a bar, I generally prefer to deal with the bartender directly. Having a server usually results in one of two scenarios:
A. I order a drink, it's $4.50 ... I give her a $10 or $20 and she gives me a five then snubs me for the rest of the night because she only got a 50 cent tip on that drink because I am sure as fuck not going to give her $5 for walking a beer 15 feet. And its not like I wasn't going to make up for it on the next drink or at the end of the night. B. I pay with credit and can't get my fucking check when I want to leave. If I want to leave its because there is somewhere else I want to be and I don't really care to wait 30 minutes for her to get around to cashing me out. I am perfectly fine with getting up and walking to the bar for every drink, it adds more chances to mingle etc. If it was an option I would fill my own fucking beer and take it to the checkout myself just so I didn't have to deal with some jackass bartender. As far as pizza goes, I always just pick it up myself. All in all I generally tip 15-20% Also I hate listening to servers complain about how hard their job is and how low their payed. I just look at them and say "do you tip your garbage man? road workers? mail carrier? No? Then shut up and get a new job." |

Isn't the idea of a drink costing a lot more in a bar because the idea is that some of that will get passed onto the people pouring/serving said drink?
regular stores make a profit and they sell for way less than half the price in a bar, and someone has to stack those on shelves and shit too. |
