Screw that. When commercials actually interfere with the sport being played, it takes away from the legitimacy of the game.

Not really, commercials have been around since the beginning of televised sports. Turning an athlete into a billboard hasn't. It makes the team and the orginaztion look cheap.

But they're not stopping the game just for the sole purpose of making you look at the supposed "billboards". Accommodating added stoppages of play to the rules just so Pepsi can squeeze out thirty seconds of advertising is a slap in the face to the people actually playing.

Not really. Those commercials help pay the salaries, and give the players a nice chance to get a cup of water. It's personal preference, it's just that mine is right.

I gotta agree with Shaw on this one. I would much rather have a commercial break than no-break and ads on the jerseys and shit. Plus, the commercial break is a great opportunity for the spectator to take a piss, get a drink, or do some other domestic activity without missing any action. In addition, you can mute the commercial or switch to another channel. With ads on jerseys, there is no escape.

There is branding all over the place in American sports; why do NFL coaches dress the way they do? Because they are ordered by the league to do so to sell gear for the sponsoring apparel company. Nike Swooshes on the shoes, socks, and jersey; you get the idea.

Shaw, I strongly believe you wouldn't be making this argument if the roles were reversed (partially indicated by the fact that you thought I was arguing American sports were the guys spending cash). I wish I could believe that you aren't blindly arguing for American sports over European sports, but I can't.
Issue 2: American sports are often more about general entertainment than the sport itself. A handful of examples: 1) From many "Cubs fans," I hear their reason for supporting the club as being "Wrigley is such an amazing place, I love to go watch the game and have a few beers." Believe me, I am A OK with that. But admit to yourself that you aren't there purely for the Baseball. The stadium is filled with more or less non-fans. It's great, it's an event, it's a fun day out in the park, but it's not an atmosphere for serious enthusiasts. 2) Cheerleaders. Cheerleaders are great. They're hot. But why do we have them? To add to the overal experience. I'm fine with them, but admit to yourself that they don't actually add to the sporting nature of the event. 3) Half-time performances, live music, music during play. Once again, it can be very entertaining, but aren't a part of the sport. They seem to be around to entice people on the fence into going to the event. Music during the play eliminates the "12th man" effect which is so awesome to experience in Europe. In England fans don't need some guy to play a keyboard organ. They sing. And they cheer, and they warn their players when somebody is attacking from their blind spot. 4) The Superbowl. It's awesome. But it's geared to non-football fans. The pinacle of American sports is full of glitz and glam and five thousand television ads that each cost millions. It's amazing. It's proof that America is a great nation. But it's not for the purists. 5) Player celebrations. This is mostly for the NFL, after every tackle and every score they celebrate their balls off. And they do whacky things like change their name to Ocho Cinco, or they pull a cell phone out of a goal post, or they go to jail for dogfighting. They do all these awesome things and I love it. Because they are both athletes and entertainers. Soccer players, for the most part, are just athletes. Yes some of them have their stunts, and yes they like to celebrate a goal, but they don't go for the monster dunk to try to posterize an opponent when a layup would do. In America you have monster dunks which are an ever so slightly lower percentage shot because people LOVE monster dunks. I love them. But admit that we love them not because they're good Basketball, but because they're awesome. In short: American sports aim to entertain in more ways than just being good sports. |

The single thing I hate about Soccer the most:
Diving. When Drogba or Ronaldo are flopping all over the ground rolling around grabbing their ankles and crying I want to turn the TV off. It turns off so many Americans to this otherwise great sport and is the single most cited reason for not liking it. And I can't blame them. Faking an injury can, and often does, decide the outcome of a game. It's miserable and needs to change. We don't have this in American sports because our sports are high scoring and lack such a severe penalty mechanism as the penalty kick. |

View: love the Colts -5 hosting Dallas this weekend. After their loss to SD, everyone was talking about how the Manning era of domination is over, how the Colts are a second-rate team now, blah blah blah. I think everyone is overreacting. Additionally, everyone is overvaluing the Cowboys right now since they've looked competent since firing Phillips. Three weeks ago, the line for this game would have been 13. I just don't buy the Colts being a 1 point dog in Dallas (which is what this line is suggesting). Market overreaction. Bet Indy big.

I haven't heard people saying that the era is over, but Indy faces a lot of injuries on both sides of the ball and it is very reasonable to say that this is a down season for them. Still, they should get to the playoffs and once theyre there, you have to fear that cocksucker Peyton.

Actually, NFL coaches have no dress code. IE: Belicheck with his cut off hoody, to Jack Del Rio with his shirt and tie. The league made a stink about Del Rio, but then allowed him to wear it for 5 out of 16 games. The NFL, to an extent has limited any on field advertising. Yes, NFL has a contract with Reebok where the jersey's and all stuff worn on the field have to be made by them, but there are no advertisments on the playing surface, or billboards that are rotating during game play. I tried watching the Cavs Celtics game last night, and the scores table with the rolling billboards were never sync'd up. I couldn't take it. I understand advertising must take place in order to fund teams, but I prefer it outside of the game, as opposed to inside of it. Europe and other countries run things differently, and I'm not saying their wrong, Im just saying I like it the true american way because I'm a one sided yank! And to UB, I love how everyone is undervaluing the Colts. Better yet, I love the mass exedus to the Bears bandwagon. Matter of fact, I hope the Colts lose out and attendence drops 25% next year, if they even play!

Dude I was a bears pessimist until I saw them beat the eagles the other night. That was a really well played game and even cutler showed some cojones.
Speaking of uniforms, I love how baseball managers wear the same uniforms as the players. It seems so natural when you're watching a game, but can you imagine them doing the same in ANY other sport? I love it. |

I would hate to be a baseball manager for that reason alone. Baseball uniforms aren't comfortable. Having to sit there and wear it for no reason, other then it's what they did in the past would suck.

Regardless, anyone that plays Rugby gets my respect. I saw a chick get KTFO when I was watching high school rugby. I love watching it when it's on TV, but there is no way in hell you are getting me to play that sport. ZERO.
