This is getting to be a big enough of a problem to have a thread about, IMO. 50,000 deaths since 2006! Source. That blew me away. That's about roughly the same number of deaths from the conflict in Iraq over the same period of time. Recently, Mexico's president called on the U.S. to crack down on weapons since they leak into Mexico and fuel the war. The same president is the one who launched the war against the cartels in late 2006; he will be leaving office sometime this year I understand.

I heard sometimes they decapitate people, and tie their head to the back of a turtle and load it with explosives. Pretty crazy shit!

A great example of what happens when your government turn the other way for the majority of its existence and all of a sudden someone tries to fix it without being anywhere near prepared for the backlash.
On a side-note, Mexico as a whole has too much pride to ever ask for help in the situation and will continually point the finger at someone else for the problem. They will continually blame the US for the weapons that go south (yes, a large number do go south, but the majority of weapons used are from black-market sales from other nations) and "if America wasn't the largest consumer of drugs, we wouldnt have this problem." Nevermind that mexico's government is a model of corruption. Fuck Felipe Calderon. |

Just saw on the news members Los Zetas just had an attack on members of Gulf Cartel inside a prison in Nuevo Leon and had a huge prison break afterward.
This shit is frequent. Particularly involving corrupt prison officials. A report last year had a prison official letting subjects out of the facility at night to perform hits on rival cartels. Borderland Beat is a good website for info. |

There is just way, way, way too much money to be made. One example is that even in deeply rural inland areas of the US, more meth is from Mexico than local areas.
The only major drug rackets they don't have controlled are ecstasy from Israel than Holland, and Heroin east of the Mississippi which comes out of the "stans" in Asia and moves on to Turkey and then different groups in Europe or Nigerians. Interesting link on "The Balkan Route" of Heroin into Europe. http://serbianna.com/analysis/archives/1311 |

Good article; whereas most you read sensationalize and focus on the violence, this one shows how Mexico's largest cartel is essentially a massive, extremely well-run business. I think this shit is fascinating.
