Gentlemen, I'm in need of some advice. I've reached a point in my life where I'm thinking of doing something I never thought I would. This decision is completely against the way I was raised and everything I've always thought I was or would be. I am probably getting a cat... more specifically, a cat instead of a dog. I lost a bet with my roommate* and am now committed to getting a new pet, either a cat or a dog... all the wisdom I've sought on this says that cats are definitely the way to go from a maintenance standpoint. I know we've got at least one cat expert on the board so I was hoping I could get some solid advice on what to look for.
I know there are different breeds of cats and whatnot but do their personalities differ more by breed or on a cat by cat basis? My thought is that I want to get the fattest, laziest, oldest cat I can find... in hopes that it will keep the roommate busy on occasion while staying mostly invisible the rest of the time and dying within the next couple years. +netz to whoever mails me the cat best fitting this description, PM me for my address. *my roommate is my daughter and the bet was that she couldn't stop shitting her pants. |

Maine Coons are pretty baller, we had one when I was younger but my dad accidentally ran over it with a disk plow, (which is the REAL cause of my emotional outbursts and cat loathing) I would like to have one again sometime.
But I would recommend going to your local shelter, and looking for an animal fitting your description -- dog or cat, that you can find. Most of them are older anyways, and it will be cheaper, also you'll be doing a good thing. EDIT: You really don't want a pet? Have you ever had a pet? I would probably own several if I could stay somewhere for more than 2 years at a time. Almost every manly man dad i've ever met opposed to getting a pet eventually falls in love with it. |

While Maine Coons are indeed badass, I recommend completely ignoring breeds. Cat "breeds" usually have health problems within each bread that requires more maintenance. And why pay the extra cash when your stupid daughter who just learned how to stop shitting herself won't know the difference?
Getting an adult cat from a shelter is a very good choice, you'll be able to interact with it and tell its disposition, and whether or not it's what you want. It's grown up and its ways are set in stone for the most part. Find a good group, look for an organization that is "No Kill" and neuters and vaccinates strays they find. the people taking care of the animals will be honest with you if you have a preference for activity level, good with children, good with other cats, etc because they want to make sure that you are a good fit for the cat and they don't want it to end up back on the street. The place I got Warren from only charged me $100 for a cat that has just been given free vet care, a clean bill of health, neutered already for you. Getting a kitten is rolling the dice, as upbringing can only change a cat's native disposition to only a certain extent. But the upside is that kittens are hilarious and awesome. |

Who would I listen to? The owner of a bonefide badass in Warren? Or somebody who lives where steet vendors sell cat kabobs? Easy choice. Except Picard did die on mistofolees' watch.

I didn't read anything anyone else said. My point is fucking shit. What I want to say is that all fucking shit else is retarded. What you want to pay the most attention to is the health aspect of the cat and its bloodline. You can get an unhealthy cat and it can fuck some shit up, trust me on that. Do you want a cat to literally shit itself to death all over your carpet? I don't think so. Typically, a shorter hair breed sheds less than longer hair, but fuck all that. Just get a healthy cat with a healthy history and shit'll be good. Fuck.

Duuuuude get a kitten. Kittens are so cute. Their paws are huge relative to their bodies. You can hold them in ONE HAND! They actually do play with balls of yarn. That's not just something people say. And two words. Cat. Nip.
Get two kittens. |

Cats are low maintenance and can be funny. Rather, there are lots of videos on the internet and everybody hopes to get a funny cat like the videos.
