It has been reported that Pete Rose will be making a possible return to baseball because of Bud Selig's desire to re-instate Rose.

(Note: I did not post this in the Sports section simply because I happen to think this is more of an Administrative Sports Headline, meaning it's not about some guy hitting home-runs, it's about some guy getting into a Hall-of-Fame)

Personally I hate both of these rat-bastards. But this is a pretty big headline, so why don't we discuss?

My reasons of why Pete Rose should be kept out of baseball are located below in italics. This is an English essay I had to write here. Feel free to reply with your arguements. I'm curious what people think about Rose possibly coming back to baseball.

The Essay:

He is Major League Baseball's all-time leader in hits and at bats. He is second all-time in doubles, fourth in runs, and tenth in walks. He was an all-star at four different positions; he is no doubt one of baseball's best utility man ever to play the game. He has two World Series Championships. He cared about the rookies; he knew the names of the groundskeepers. "He prefers the little people," said his Hall-of-Fame manager, Sparky Anderson. Another recent inductee by the name of Mike Schmidt once said, "He is the most likeable, arrogant person I have ever met." In 1975, he was Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year (the runner-up was O.J. Simpson). His name is Pete Rose, his nickname is 'Charlie Hustle'. He is the king of hustlers in the best and worse sense. In 1975, he signed a then-record 4 year, 3.2 million dollar deal with the Philadelphia Phillies, a far cry from today's 10 year, 252 million dollar paychecks. When it was getting about the time to report to spring training, with another team other than the Cincinnati Reds, Larry Bowa, the Phillies scrawny, cocky shortstop gave Rose a call. Bowa wanted to make sure that he did not lose his title as the team showboat, so he called Rose and challenged him as to who might be the first one in the Clearwater Clubhouse a few days later. At midnight, just hours before the gates at Clearwater opened, Bowa got a call from Rose who was in Las Vegas. Rose told him, "You win, you'll be there before me," he said as slot machines jingled in the background. Larry Bowa wandered into the deserted clubhouse at 7:40 a.m., twenty minutes earlier than usual just to be sure. Then who to his surprise was standing by his locker all
decked-out in his new Phillies garb; Pete Rose. Rose is no doubt baseball's poster boy for talent. He is considered by most to be one of, if not the greatest player ever to play the game. Yet, Rose’s bust is not on display at Cooperstown. He has never received even one vote, or been on a Hall-of-Fame ballot for that matter. In 1989, Rose was permanently banned from the game of baseball. In the world of sports, the line between eligibility and ineligibility is very thin. Pete Rose crossed that line. Bart Giamatti did a fine job of proving that Rose bet on his own team, which is a violation of Major League Rule 21. He committed the capital offense in sports. Because of his cocky and egotistical attitude, he still refuses to admit he is wrong. Therefore, Rose should remain eternally banished from the sport he raped of, baseball.
On February 23, 1984, Esquire John M. Dowd and his firm were retained and empowered by A. Bartlett Giamatti, pursuant to the Major League Baseball Agreement, to investigate Peter Edward Rose, Rose was then the Manager of the Cincinnati Reds Baseball Club. The decision to investigate Rose was based on the fact that the Director of Security for Major League Baseball had received reports during the past year that Pete Rose had bet on Major League Baseball games, including games of his club, the Cincinnati Reds. Betting on your own team is a direct and purposeful violation of Major League Rule 21. Rule 21 states:

"Any player, umpire, or club or league official or employee,
who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has no duty to perform, shall be declared ineligible for one year.

Any player, umpire, or club or league official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform, shall be declared permanently ineligible."

When a participant of baseball or any sport for that matter,
bets on a game where they may alter the outcome, as
Pete Rose did, that act erodes and eventually destroys the integrity of that game. Betting on one's team gives rise to the ultimate conflict of interest in which the individual player/bettor places his
personal financial interest above the interests of the team. This violation is why Pete Rose should remain eternally banished from the game. Bart Giamatti sentenced Rose, he said, "the sad end of a sorry episode. One of the game's greatest players has engaged in a variety of acts which have stained the game, and now must live with the consequences of the acts. Baseball is getting a rid of a cancer."(MacCambridge 32)
In the evidence summary of the findings of John Dowd, it was determined that Rose did not deal directly with gamblers, but rather placed his bets through others. The evidence also showed that Rose placed bets through a friend, Michael Bertolini. In turn Bertolini then placed those bets with an unidentified gambler in New York City. One source of information is a 1988 tape recorded conversation between Bertolini and another of Rose's associates, Paul Janzen. During that conversation, Bertolini mentioned that Rose had incurred substantial debts to Bertolini and the New York gambler. He said that Rose was planning to pay off those debts by giving them autographs, his two World Series Rings, a red Corvette that GM gave him after he broke Ty Cobb's all-time hit record, and the bat he used to break that record. No evidence was ever discovered that Rose bet against the Cincinnati Reds. Several witnesses to this ordeal testified that Rose would go days without betting on them because he felt they couldn't win. In the Dowd Report, thirteen people testified that Rose bet on baseball; thirteen of the thirteen said he bet on the Reds. Most of these witnesses have been or are in prison for drug laundering and tax evasion. Rose himself served five months for tax evasion in 1990.
During the All-Century team ceremony prior to the 1999 All-Star game, Pete Rose received such a lengthy and raucous ovation that he raised his cap three times in response. The huge crowd seemed ready to forgive and forget Rose's sins against baseball. Yet, baseball wants Rose to confess. Perhaps then, the game would forgive him. It is simple to Rose, get help and get reinstated. Baseball had so many reformed cocaine addicts in the 80's, they could have formed a team in each league. Rose did sign a deal permanently banning him from baseball. In return for his signature, the deal stated that the Commissioner did not reach any formal finding that Rose bet on baseball games. Even though there are 258 pages out there, known as the Dowd Report, saying he is guilty as sin. Rose was and still is willing to sacrifice the Hall-of-Fame and all the other perks that baseball has to offer just for a little piece of paper with Bart Giamatti's signature on it saying he didn't bet on baseball. In an interview with NBC commentator, Jim Gray, immediately after the aforementioned ceremony, Rose was asked whether he finally would admit he bet on baseball. He replied, "I'm not going to admit to something that didn't happen." When asked about the evidence Rose said, "What evidence, show me the evidence, I mean show it to me. Where is it?"(Lahman 4). Apparantly he does not know that the evidence is everywhere. It is in a 258 page report that is accessible to anyone, it is straight out of the mouths of people he calls “friends”, it is on betting slips that are so abundant they are becoming collectors items. Yet in 2002 Rose still, does not get it. All he has to do is admit his problem and he is back in the game of baseball. America is just waiting for a repentant Rose. It is like a John Grisham novel, with the only difference being that the book is getting more boring and hard to read every page America turns. Pete Rose is only lying to himself now. Pete Rose is the biggest embarrassment to the game of Baseball and he has done something that no one who actually loved the game would do. Rose has no respect for the game, and therefore the game should not respect him. Pete Rose's cocky attitude is his way of saying that he does not want back in baseball, so keeping it that way is fine. He has ruined the lives of many. Bart Giamatti put it best when he said, "Baseball is getting a rid of a cancer." Oddly enough, Giamatti died of a massive heart attack a week after making that statement in Rose's sentencing. He hit the nail on the head, do not welcome that cancer back in.

i agree with you completely banning Pete Rose was a very good decision. Its a great statement by baseball to show that they dont tolerate that type of behavior.

Its too bad that baseball doesnt take such an agressive policy towards the use of steriods. Steriods is the new cancer ruining baseball.

You know what I think. The guy played baseball for so long and makes a mistake and then he is out of the hall of fame. Yes I agree that he shouldn't beable to play baseball anymore, but come on now hasn't it been long enough? Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame.

If he truly cared about baseball as much as he claims he does by wanting to return to baseball, he wouldnt have placed a bet ever on his team. If your passoniate about something you're going to do everything in your power not to have that taken away from you. Pete Rose however, did not make any effort to do this, its a rule to not gamble on your own teams and he violated this. All that baseball wants him to do now is admit to the fact he did gamble, and he still wont do it. The sends the message clear as day, that he really doesnt care as much about baseball, as the people who have already been selected into the hall of fame.

Yes I agree that he shouldn't beable to play baseball anymore, but come on now hasn't it been long enough? Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame.

If your passoniate about something you're going to do everything in your power not to have that taken away from you. Pete Rose however, did not make any effort to do this, its a rule to not gamble on your own teams and he violated this. All that baseball wants him to do now is admit to the fact he did gamble, and he still wont do it. The sends the message clear as day, that he really doesnt care as much about baseball, as the people who have already been selected into the hall of fame.
