University finds porn film was shot in its building
The Associated PressPublished: February 1, 2007

MUNCIE, Indiana: University officials have been stunned to learn that a porn film involving students was shot more than two years ago in a school-owned mansion normally reserved for seminars.

School officials gave director Christopher Gregory permission to shoot scenes for a horror movie there, but Gregory said turning "Vampire Diaries" into porn was a last-minute decision.

"From a director's point of view, I don't believe a filmmaker should be reined in creatively," Gregory said.

The film was released Friday on DVD. Featuring Ball State students, it follows Dracula's daughter as she makes an appearance in the 21st century as a 23-year-old college student exploring her sexuality.

Nothing in the film identifies the university, Gregory said.

Ball State Provost Terry King said the university will review the agreement and try to determine whether the film damaged the university's reputation before deciding on legal action.

"We clearly didn't do our homework here," said King. "He was pretty slick about the whole thing, in retrospect."

How surprising that BSU wants to bury this movie before it ever gets out...

From the Director's website

http://www.midnite-films.com/

A STATEMENT FROM THE DIRECTOR OF VAMPIRE DIARIES...

THE CONTROVERSY REGARDING OUR MOTION PICTURE WHICH WAS FILMED PARTLY ON BALL STATE UNIVERSITY WITH APPROVAL BY BALL STATE OFFICIALS HAS BEEN THE FOCUS OF SOME TO CHALLENGE THE CONTENT OF THE MOVIE.

LET ME BE CLEAR. IN NO WAY HAVE I ALLOWED ANY BSU TRADEMARK LOGOS OR COPYRIGHT VIOLATIONS TO BE INCLUDED IN THE MAKING OF THIS FILM.

WE HAVE TAKEN EXTRA CARE TO MAKE SURE THAT BSU (AS ORIGINALLY AGREED TO BY BSU) AND ITS OFFICIALS, WERE NOT NAMED IN THE CREDITS OF THE MOVIE.

WHAT TROUBLES ME AS A FILMMAKER IS THE STAND THE UNIVERSITY ITSELF IS NOW TAKING BY DEMANDING, THROUGH LEGAL ACTION, TO NOT ALLOW OUR DISTRIBUTOR TO RELEASE THIS FILM ON THE MARKET - WITHOUT EVER SEEING THE FILM FIRST!

IT IS TROUBLING TO SEE THAT A UNIVERISTY WHOSE FOUNDATION IS HIGHER LEARNING THROUGH THE SCIENCES AND THE ARTS, AND IN THIS CASE ARTISTIC EXPRESSION THROUGH ITS TEACHINGS AND PHILOSOPHY, SHOULD NOW SUPPRESS A FILMMAKERS 1ST ADMENDMENT RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH REGARDLESS OF THE MOVIES CONTENT OR STORYLINE.

IT IS THEREFORE THAT WE HAVE ASKED THE ACLU AND THE FREE SPEECH COALITION TO SUPPORT OUR RIGHT UNDER A FREE DEMOCRACY TO CONTINUE OUR QUEST TO RELEASE THIS FILM LATER THIS MONTH.

IT IS OUR HOPE THAT WE CAN MOVE BEYOND RHETORIC AND CENSORSHIP ANTICS AND ALLOW VIEWS AND OPINIONS THAT MAY, TO SOME, BE CONSIDERED OBSCENE, THE RIGHT TO EXPRESS THOSE VIEWS AND PURCHASE THIS UPCOMING FILM.

THERE ARE THOSE THAT MAY NOT APPROVE OF WHAT WE DO, AND IT IS THEIR RIGHT TO DO SO, BUT UNDER A FREE DEMOCRACY IT IS OUR RIGHT TO PRODUCE AND DISTRIBUTE CONTENT THAT WE AND THOSE THAT WISH TO SEE SUCH ENTERTAINMENT.

THIS IS A PRIME EXAMPLE OF WHAT FREE SPEECH IS ALL ABOUT IN A FREE AND OPEN SOCIETY.
