I'm fine with the Social Security tax going from 4 to 6. None of these cuts were supposed to be permanent. We need to fix the deficit and that will require big spending cuts and some tax increases.

If this shit keeps up, just like corporations don't have to be headquartered in the US, rich people don't have to live here, and they won't.

It's more than just temp tax breaks expiring. The gov is phasing out personal and dependency exemptions, adding a Medicaid surtax, and phasing out many itemized deductions.

It's one small step of many that will help shrink the deficit. If you want to bitch at anyone then blame the guy who gave America huge tax cuts while massively increasing spending by waging two wars with little concern for how to pay for them. We were in much better financial shape before that. If Obama can balance short term spending with long term cuts while still investing heavily in research and development we should be okay.

But I agree with you that we need tax reform, especially for corporations so they'll stop hoarding their cash overseas.

I definitely agree that Bush spent too much damn money. That's one of my chief criticisms of his presidency.

But Obama certainly made things worse. He showed no signs of fucks given about the deficit during his first four years. The facts about the growth of spending under Obama - The Washington Post

As far as these tax increases go, it's obviously not about fixing the deficit. Imo, they're just going to be used to justify the batshit insane budget proposed next fall. The "fiscal cliff" amounts to fuck-all in terms of government budgeting.

I'm glad we can agree that the tax code is messed up. That's one reason I never wanted to work in that field. No one else in the country likes our current methods except tax professionals (lawyers, accountants, and IRS agents). It's too complex. I don't see it as a sustainable model, and it's due for massive overhaul.

The source of my anger is the tax increases. If I thought these increases were part of a bigger plan to eliminate the deficit, balance the budget, and reduce the debt, I'd be more willing to play ball.

That's simply not the case, though. These increases will only be used to justify more spending. I guarantee it.

Every president is kicking the can down the road. It's going to take citizens demanding less government spending to shrink the deficit. Taxing everybody into oblivion only gives the government more to spend. That doesn't fix the problem.
