I got a couple chickens on the Pirates to win the NL/WS at absurdly long odds. They've been a surprise team this year and are only like 3 games out of first place. Crazier things have happened.

Cubs 4 out of their last 5. Beat up on the Yanks yesterday. This is a turnaround series for them. If they can win the series, the season will take a turn up for about a month. This weekend is the Cubs season in reality. I wish Big Z was pitching after what the Yankees said about him not being able to pitch in the NL West.

Hey Kremlin here's a story about what that picture means to me:

At the start of the NFL playoffs in 2007, I put $100 on the NY Giants at 70:1. I elected not to hedge when they played in the NFC Championship. When they made it to the Super Bowl, I decided to just let it right against The Greatest Team Ever™ (the 18-0 Patriots) too. When Tyree made that catch, I was already pretty wasted. There aren't more than one or two sports-related moments in my life in which I was going as crazy as I was then.

One such moment though may very well have been the goal against England.

Eh I don't really want to talk about the helmet catch.

My dad told me something that shocked me. Apparently the afterglow from the Bs winning the stanley cup was bigger than when the Sox won in 2004. Shocking to me, Boston has always been a red sox town as far as I could tell.

Fun Boston fact: the Patriots are owners of the longest championship drought among Boston's big 4.

The red sox are so much fun to watch right now. Partially because they're winning. It's just so satisfying how many offensive weapons we have. Gonzalez could be the front-runner for AL MVP (but only because Bautista's Toronta will end up out of the playoff race.) Jacoby Ellsbury is having a massive comeback year, as is Big Papi. Josh Beckett is a Cy Young candidate again. Dice-K is finally gone. And Pedroia is the most fun defender in Boston to watch since Alex Gonzalez.

What UB didn't share, was that I bet money line on the Patriots to win that game, which was the biggest single bet of my life (until recently max-betting against triple crown winners annually.) Knowing the swing in store, UB (who was in Vegas) and I agreed to watch the game in separate locations. The money line in that game was such an incredible bet for the Patriots, because it was equivalent to the spread being around 8.5 points, compared to the 13 or so it actually was. A rare moment where the point spread and money line were nowhere near each other and I took advantage. Then I (and Vegas) took a massive beat on that catch.

Aside from the obvious jews-playing-sports jokes, this is actually really cool. Since Jewish-Americans are eligible for Israeli citizenship, they're also eligible for the Israeli WBC baseball team. kremlin, you would probably like this site. I think you'll need to reg with a U.S. address but basically you can create a fantasy baseball lineup every day and compete for cash prizes. They're doing a $50 freeroll every day during baseball season so you can chase loot without risking anything if you want to. I showed it to another baseball junkie friend of mine who spent like one hour obsessing over who to put on a $5 lineup for me, so there's a chance you'll think it's pretty sick.

Being a Cubs fan, it's hard to get jacked up for 6 months of dissapointment, but opening day of baseball season is special. Last year, I fell back in love with minor league baseball. South Bend and Fort Wayne have done an incredible job with their stadiums, and it's a blast to head to the park on Sundays with the family.

Having said that, April 11th, our yearly Cubs trip takes place. Normally, it's about 2 or 3 cars full of guys that head up early in the season. I missed last year's trip, but here is how the trip before went with me.

We leave the timeout at 8 AM after having a couple drinks when the bar opens up at 7. I usually drink all the way, and hammer a pint before we get to wrigley, but this year I was more focused on the smoke, so I didn't drink til we got to the park. We get in, heckle during BP for 2 hours, which is the best part of the day regardless of the year. In between the 2nd and 3rd inning, as I'm walking up the steps to snag a beer, my flip flop gets caught on a step and I trip a bit. The head of security corners me and rips the wristband off of my wrist and tells me I'm to drunk to have anymore to drink. At this time, I'm 3 beers in and not even catching a good buzz yet. I flat told him I was going to drink all day, weather it would be there or at Murphy's. Well, I snag another beer and 1/4 of the way into it, I get booted. Head over to Murphy's and start pounding Crown and cran for 7 innings. To make a long story short, the Chicago police had to be called to the bar and were there to take me to the clink. I snuck out the back, down an alley, purchased a sweet pair of Cubs sweats and left without getting violated in jail.

That's our trip in a nutshell. This year, 27 of us are taking a bus up on the trip. 8 AM -9 PM of complete disater. It will be interesting to see how this one shakes out.
