Whoever thought a movie with Will Smith could actually be somewhat intelligible, and not just a bunch of running?
Well, now I know. I expected I, Robot to just be another dumb sci-fi flic. Well, what I saw exceeded these expectations. You're thinking, isn't this just the matrix/bicentennial man/whatever all over? Well, that's what I thought, too. And I suppose that you could call it that. However, it pulls it off more than well enough for me to just not care. The movie had its fair share of action, but that didn't ever seem to be the main focus. The main character was put through frustration, but not so much frustration as to make me want to scream at the stupid people. I do believe this is the first action movie in the 100 minute time frame that wasn't just stupid. It'll make you think some, it has action, it has some romance, it has friendship, and it doesn't drag. If nothing else, if you're weird, for some reason it shows Will Smith's buttox. However, for all of you who don't just go to movies for dumb action and nudity, and who are sick of unrealistic and just stupid sci-fi movies... go see it. I give it an A+ for entertainment. |

Yeah, i don't see it being that great...I'll probably see it but I don't know what my review will be...as of now it looks to me like they ruined a perfectly good Isaac Asimov novel by putting Will Smith in it.

Great action movie? Yeah. Good visual effects? Very good. Sure-fire blockbuster? You bet. Worth seeing? If action is your thing, of course. Thought provoking sci-fi? No. Switch brain to OFF position. Apologize to Asimov on your way out. | |||

Wow, somebody's anal.
I never once said it was a cinematic masterpiece. I never once said it was completely realistic. I just said it wasn't completely unrealistic. Don't tell me you haven't seen much more far-fetched sci-fi movies that just screamed cheese. That's why I gave it an A+ for entertainment, not cinematic quality. It's no Citizen Kane, but it's still a good action flick with some intelligence to it, and just a bland rehash of the same old story. I never once said it was a masterpiece, I was just saying that it's not complete stupid crap like many action flicks are. Bravo for calling me queer for making a stupid remark about the brief partial nudity of the movie. Obviously I was being completely serious, and I think that showing nudity like that has any redeeming value. Clever. [ July 17, 2004, 12:48 PM: Message edited by: rla128 ] |

Nobody actually likes Citizen Kane. It's an old movie. It's no longer a great film by today's standards. People who talk about this bullshit are the same who claim to "enjoy" Les Miserable (sp?), give up, you probobly never saw it. The only reason you talk about Citizen Kane, and Crime and Punishment, and other works, is because everyone else says they are good. It's a self-perpetuating matter.
Now... there are great films and pieces of art out there. Consider Pulp Fiction or The Godfather. These are works that deserve being the benchmark to which other films measure. |

FC is right. I've never seen the film, and i'm a pretty big movie buff. I also don't compare movies to Citizen Kane, but i'm sure a lot of the people who do compare it also haven't seen it. Not to say that you haven't rla, but i'm sure you get what he's getting at.

fuck you guys. citizen kane is fucking AWESOME. film buff my ass if youve never seen this movie. Citizen Knae and Orson Welles did so much to change how hollywood made movies. cinematography advanced by leaps and bounds because of the countless techniques that were invented by greg tolland for this movie. And lets talk about pulp fiction and the godfather. these movies would not be what they are without citizen kane. did you now that ck was one of the first movies to mess with time through editing? did you know that with out tolland the DP for the godfather (gordon willis) would never have been able to capture the darkness(as in lighting not mood) in the film? Have you ever seen Citizen Kane FC? not a good movie by todays standards (todays standards being Torque, triple X, and white chicks)? well then jesus fucking christ why the hell did the american film institute rate it the #1 movie of all time? oh shit i forgot...you know more than them. go watch the damn movie, then we will talk. (by the way, welles made this movie at the age of 25. what will you accomplish by the time youre 25?)

Hello, assuming!
Yes, I have seen Citizen Kane. I feel sorry for those who refer to movies such as Citizen Kane as "old," and not worth watching anymore. I have also seen the Godfather and Pulp Fiction. They are all great movies, and I enjoyed them immensely. They are what you might call magnificent works of cinema. Many have called Citizen Kane the greatest of them all. Therefore, I used it as my example. I, Robot is no Citizen Kane, meaning it's no masterpiece, but in my opinion it's still much better than most action flicks of today. |

victim, how far does the movie stray from Asimov's story? I was pretty worried about how much they were going to hack it up.
------------------ VOL Dumb-down I would have guessed that they changed the great original Asimov story, but I wondered how much. |

I've seen the movie.
It invented stuff sure... so did Star Wars. Is Star Wars a great film? I wouldn't say so. PS... Star Wars is #15 on your precious film list, this just goes to show that their list is 100 most popularily respected films, not the 100 greatest films. Your list also includes "Some Like it Hot," which is little more than an old chick flick, had it come out today it would have been swept aside faster than "You Got Served." Edit again: Your list also includes "Jaws," which may have been good in it's day, but these days there is better quality film on HBO than Jaws. [ July 18, 2004, 03:01 AM: Message edited by: DJ FC ] |

i might be the only one, but i really don't give a shit what movie rla compared i, robot to in terms of greatness... it's his damn opinion. you can't argue with that.
but anyway. i really want to see i, robot.. i almost saw it the other night at the drive-in in plymouth, but i freaked out on the way there and went back home because there were some scary-ass clouds lurking around above 31. seriously, i should've listened to fruit and pulled over to buy a camera because they were the weirdest and scariest clouds i've ever seen in my life. |

FC, simply tell me what you didn't like about citizen kane? was it because it was in black and white and you needed more than a 5 second attention span to follow it?

this was not a popular movie in it's time, in fact because of the advertising block that William Randolph Hearst (who owned most all of the popular newspapers) put on this movie. Nobody really began to see this movie for what it was until like the 70's.

so back to i, robot..
i saw it tonight, at good ol' north pointe. i thought it was a fantastic movie.. it was also a relief to see a movie that didn't have any mushy love stories intertwined within the plot. i probably wouldn't have minded, but once i realized that "hey! there weren't any make-out scenes!" i was pretty impressed. there was also a very good plot (i guess that would be a thanks to Asimov, i haven't read the book) and lots of good action. definitely never a boring moment. GREAT movie. also, i'm pretty sure i'm scared of robots now. hopefully i'll be dead if we ever really do come up with creepy robots like that.. |

I haven't even seen the movie, yet I am willing to call 'BULLSHIT' on underwater... 90% movies that came out since the 80's and most of those before had some sort of love story in it.

Saw it, loved it. There's some chemistry implied between Will Smith and the Dr. chick, but there is no actual love story situation or ending in the movie. The closest I saw it get was when at the end of the movie, they looked at eachother in a manner that would imply romance, but never became romance.
The book was probably better, I don't care. I'd much rather do nothing and stare at a screen than read the book in most cases. If I've already read the book, great, I can compare the two. But if there's a movie in the theater that's based on a book I haven't read, there's not a chance in hell that I'm going to intentionally read the book before I go see the movie. |

Anyway onto the rest of the movie, I personally thought it was good, not mind blowing, and I have seen other summer flicks that I like more. But I think Will Smith is a great actor and helped to make this movie as good as it is. | |

Ehh...sok. I went to the theatre expecting to see action, special effects, and not much else. It was exactly what I expected. Would I watch it again? Sure. Would I buy it? Ehh...I suppose anything's possible, but I highly doubt it.
