ok, kiddies. since i have to type this info up for a few friends, i figured i would share this with all of you.

so what exactly is usenet?

The most available distribution of newsgroups is USENET, which contains over ten thousand unique newsgroups covering practically every human proclivity. It is not part of the Internet, but can be reached through most Internet service providers. USENET was originally implemented in 1979-80 by Steve Bellovin, Jim Ellis, Tom Truscott, and Steve Daniel at Duke University. The names of newsgroups are comprised of a string of words separated by periods, such as " rec.humor.funny" or "misc.jobs.offered". The first word (ie "rec" or "misc") represents the top level category of newsgroups. The second word (in these examples "humor

there is a newgroup for virtually every topic you could think of. you can look at usenet as a huge river of data that no one owns. ISPs and news services tap into this feed and give you access to their newsgroup servers.

the newsgroups that are applicable to free stuff would be the binary groups. usenet only supports a certain amount of data per post. mp3s can be posted in their entirety, while programs or movies have to be chopped up into multiple posts.

here are the major advantages to newgroups over P2P networks:

virtually untraceable- unlike a P2P network, the movie and recording industry cannot track who is downloading what. you don't have to worry about being sued $5,000 for downloading 1 shitty song.

speed- in most cases, downloading anything off a news server housed by your ISP is ridiculously faster than P2P. in the time it takes to download a song off of a P2P network, you could download an entire album off of usenet.



so how do you take advantage of this beautiful service?

first, you need to see if newsgroups/usenet access is provided with you ISP account. check your ISP's website or call them. not all ISPs offer free usenet access. therefore, you may have to pay a small monthly fee and subscribe to a news service such as giganews- www.giganews.com

even if you have to pay a montly fee, its well worth it IMO when you take into account all of the benefits.



next, you need a news reader. news readers are like web browsers for usenet. not all news readers are equal. check out his article to see what i mean:

i use newsbin pro. it is the best in my opinion. you get a 10 day trial after which you must purchase the program. i have heard that you can get a crack for it and get the program for free. but that would be illegal. and i would never knowingly break the law. in fact, this entire article is for research purposes only.

it might also be a good idea to get a program that deals w/ .par files (google it).

play around w/ your newsbin pro and get a feel for how it works. it comes pre loaded w/ the newsgroups you need. you'll just have to:
1. enter the news server settings for you account as designated by you ISP or news service provider.

2. subscribe to newsgroups- as previously mentioned, there are TONS of newsgroups. newsbin pro is nice in that it comes preloaded with common/popular news groups and you can search them via filters and post count. example: it takes all of 10 seconds to select binaries-music newsgroups and then sort by the music newsgroup that is the busiest (as indicated by post count). also, you can filter via keywords. if i want a rock music newsgroup in the binaries category, i check the binaries box and type "rock".

learning how to search & filter newsgroups will save you a lot of time

3. search for desired content- save time by using the search function if you want something specific

Are you youngsters shitting me in not knowing about usenet? At one time (i.e. 10-12 years ago) it and email were the only reasons to have internet service as few places had websites.

Also to add to AK, you might also need a few programs to put the big files back together. JAS works with some files particularly, mpegs and avi.
Another news reader is Free Agent/Agent. Hell, I think you can access usenet from most email readers like outlook express.

one more thing. An ISP who offers free USENET is Earthlink (but limits what you can subscribe to). SBC does not offer USENET. AOL (at one time anyway) had everything on Usenet, but I suspect that has long changed.

I doubt it. Hypothetically speaking you'd be picking up the signal from an unsecured router with your wifi. You would still need to set up the news account through POP3 or whatever similar to how you would set up an email account through a mail reader. Then you'd most likely need their user ID and password to log on.

If you're good enough to hack through all of that then, you're not asking this question.

I downloaded newsbin pro but keep getting a 502 Authentication Error from the server so nothing will show up. It generates the list of groups just fine but nothing shows up when i subscribe to a group. It says the username or password is wrong. But I'm connecting to the news server through my school ISP and I know I'm using the right password. The username/password combo works when I connect to the news server through Outlook Express but Outlook doesn't show any of the alt.binaries groups.

So I changed the port I connected to and got rid of the username/password error but I'm still not getting any posts to come up when I subscribe to a group that says it has thousands of posts. I think Ga Tech just doesn't let us access the alt.* groups through their server even though the groups are showing up on the list.
