I realize we have a few unorganized threads floating around on beer. I'd like this thread to be home to sharing information about the latest beer you just tried for the first time. Think of this thread as similar to DJ FC's Energy Drink Thread.
Last night I was at Marsh looking for a six-pack to enjoy for the football games today. One of my favorite beers is Blue Moon which pitches itself as a "Belgian White Ale". I saw this other beer called Hoegaarden (pronounced Who-Gar-Den) which also calls itself a "Belgian White Ale". I figured I'd give it a try to see how it stacked up against Blue Moon.  Hoegaarden has many similar characteristics to Blue Moon. It lacks that "hint of orange" taste that Blue Moon carries; but this is not necessarily a bad thing. Hoegaarden is also a little more authentically Belgian than Blue Moon. Whether you know this or not, Blue Moon is made in Golden, Colorado by the fine people at Coors' Brewing. Hoegaarden is actually brewed in Belgium, specifically Hoegaarden, Belgium; and is imported and bottled by Labatts USA. For me, most often when I try a new beer, I'm not terribly fond of it upon the first sip. Hoegaarden was an exception to this for me. Right from the first swallow, I thought to myself "damn this is pretty solid". Give it a try sometime if you're a fan of White Ale beers. good idea for a thread.
recently i bought a $12, 46oz. bottle of Budweiser Brewmaster's Private Reserve. it looks like a wine bottle with a swing top grolsch top. i saved the bottle. Apparently, the brewmasters @ AB have had a holiday tradition of skimming the top of the freshly brewed bud (before it is treated for canning/ bottling) and saved it for themselves and thier family. it is 8.5 percent alcohol, which is always good and has the body to stand up to the alcohol. it is less yeasty than the typical top-fermented belgian ales that usually have as much alcohol and body. overall i give it an A- another selection i've recently had is Zywiec Porter. typical porter beer from an unlikely source for porter: Poland. this bitch was 9.5 % alc. kick ass. smooth taste, good body and texture, very stout-ish without the heaviness typically associated w/ stout. overall i give it a B+ heres a link... http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/zywiec-porter/6561/8089/ |

First of all: Great idea for a thread! I know I've sampled quite a few beers in my time and will love to contribute.
Now on to the Sam Adams debate: I am a Sam Adams fan as well. I think it is one of the premier American beers. It doesn't taste like piss like most American pilsners, and the variety they have is impressive. I killed a few of these last night:  Samuel Adams Black Lager Very dark, even by Sam Adams standards. A great flavor, reminds me of some Irish beers I've had in the past. The beer is actually thick as well, rather than merely tasting thick (this is not necessarily a good thing). Sam Adams is almost undrinkable in most flavors. Some are decent, but you'll never catch me ordering it at any bar. This includes the unlikely event that a bar exists that only serves pabst blue ribbon and sam adams.
Samuel Jackson on the other hand, it'll get ya drunk! |

Really? I think the Boston Lager is pretty awesome. But yea, I mean I've tried one or two of their other beers and wasn't terribly impressed. (Sam Adams Light and Sam Adams Cherry Wheat - I'd give them both a C+).

Samuel Adams Winter Lager
 All around better than the black lager, this beer has a solid taste and texture. A little on the spicey side (the lable indicates they include 'winter spices'), I still enjoy it quite a bit. Overall I rate this beer an 8.0/10. B+ |

I had a new beer tonight at Buffalo Wild Wings: Bass
 I ordered a 23ozer 'cause they were on sale at B-Dubs for $3.50. Big mistake. In the morning I will review another beer they had on sale for $3.50 that I enjoy much more than I enjoyed Bass. When the waitress brought my Bass, I immediately knew there was a strong chance I was not going to enjoy the beer. It has a very dark color. I really am not fond of dark beers one bit. In fact, I can't think of one of the top of my head that I really enjoy enough to give higher than a B+. Bass was VERY strong and bold and dark and bitter. I disliked it quite a bit. I almost went as far as to just not finish it, and set it aside for the waitress to take away; but then I realized that I would be violating some unwritten beer law by doing so, so I painstakingly finished it. I will not be seeking this beer out again. Nor do I recommend it to you. It's a horrible tasting beer; at least for someone with taste preferences similar to mine. Orgazmo seemed to enjoy it alright after trying a swallow of it. edit: Notice the color of Hoegaarden it its mug (from the first post) compared to the color of Bass in its mug. I'll basically have to agree with FC on his reviews.
I'd give the Black Lager a solid C+, it was ok, but I don't think its something I'd pick up again. I drank a pitcher of the Winter Lager at the locker room last week, and it was considerably better than the Black Lager. I'd go with a solid B with it as well. I'll have to try out the Hoegaarden that UB recommended, as I am a fan of Blue Moon. I'm partial to darker beers personally, particularly Irish beers, but I like a wide variety as well. Being that I live directly above a liquor store with a huge variety of imports and microbrews, I've been trying out quite a bit here and there. I'll start posting some reviews as well. As for Bass, I enjoy Bass and I'd give it a B+, I don't like it as much as Guinness, but its good. Black and Tans are good. |

I had not tried this beer until a week ago, but since that time I've had about 15 of them - because I find it very appealing: Labbatt Blue
 Labatt is a Canadian beer with smooth and mild features. It almost tastes like a light beer, even though it is not one. It has present, full flavor, yet is far from filling. Unlike a lot of beers (Mich Ultra is a nice example) this beer finishes off nice when you swallow it, instead of leaving you with that hallow "where'd the flavor go" feeling that many cheaper beers display. This is a great beer to buy if you're looking to get drunk on beer, but don't want to drink something pissy like Keystone Light. I've found Labatt's to be pretty affordable compared to most other beers. I am a very big fan of Labatt Blue right now. I might go so far as to put it in my Top 5 favorite beers. I agree with the Bass review. I had it by accident at hooters, when the broad brought it to me by mistake. Her boobs hypnotized me though and I told her I'd drink it anyway. BAD move, and I do like darker beers.

Bare Knuckle Stout
I tried this on Draft the other night while out at Scotty's. It has a very similar taste to Guinness extra stout, but probably even more stout than that. It's not bad, but I'd prefer a plain Guinness to this beer. I give it a B-. Leinenkugel honeyweiss Pretty solid wheat beer. Not real strong but it has a crisp taste with a hint of sweet to it. It's from Wisconsin (kinda surprising by the name) and I'd say its a pretty good beer. I give it a solid B. |
