Fantastic fucking movie. It's an independent type deal that was written/directed by Zach Braf (JD from Scrubs). He also stars in it along side Natalie Portman (which is what attracted me to the film ). Anyway, it's a pretty simple story about a 26 year old who goes back to Jersey (where he hasn't been in 9 years) for his mother's funeral. During this time, he doesn't take his medication and realizes by the people he comes in contact with (both old friends and new) that he's not happy with his life.

You're probably saying "That's gay. I've seen pleanty of movies like that before." The thing about this movie is the writing, cinematography, and acting. I'd see this movie again in a heatbeat. It's sort of artsy of course, but that's what really makes the movie. More serious than I expected...definitely a good date movie.

Finally a second good thing to come out of New Jersey. After me of course. The fact that the film was set in New Jersey has little relevance, but there was just something about the storyline on this one that attracts even the simple minded viewers.

That could have something to do with it being one of the worst movies ever made. The movie is so incredibly gay, it automatically turns all of its viewers into homosexuals (though most of the people that view the film on their own accord are homosexuals in the first place). I actually had to endure weeks of therapy to regain my appetite for beautiful females after seeing it.

It was awful. God awful.

Yeah I never heard of it, and I probably will never watch it. The fact that there hasn't been much talk about it probably furthers my pre-opinion that it sucks horse dong.

I will watch it for the simple fact that Natalie Portman is quite possibly the world's most perfect woman.

I found her to be quite unattractive in the movie. Not sure if it was because she really was unattractive in the film...or if I had already turned into a homosexual by the time she was unveiled. Either way, prepare for disappointment.

I would just like to say one more time that 'gaz is the only person I have heard say they didn't like this movie. UB and I both put it in our top 10's.

As far as Natalie Portman's hotness goes, it's still there. They toned it down a bit for her character, but she was still pretty hot.

We also both have The Godfather in the top spot, which I believe is your avitar?

People have different tastes in movies. I'm not saying that 'gaz is wrong. I am only commenting on how amazing some of his statements are on this movie, such as "worst movie ever made." Especially when it is on IMDb's top 250, which I also know is not a great measuring stick since it has all 3 LotR movies in the top ten, but it is based on people's rating. The few people I talk to other than O that didn't particularly like the movie, still agree that it is well made, but it's just not their type of moive.

Okay I am totally going to stand up for Adaptation here. That is a great movie. I dont know anything about Garden State, but Adaptation was done really well.

I havn't seen the movie, but I'm pretty sure that by the way people are discussing there is nothing to "get" and not to get.

It seems rather stylistic in nature, and whether these styles fit your tastes or not is the determining factor as to whether you will enjoy it or not.

Personally I plan not to watch this film as it seems pretty faggish. I bet a bunch of angst-filled emo kids would love it.

This movie is, in a word, atrocious. What makes it even worse is like 95% of the people who see it like it, which still baffles me to this day. I was told before seeing it that it was "sooooooooooo good". Man, was I mislead. It tries so hard to be "cool" and so hard to be "hip"--- but it's like some emo kid got a camera and a modest budget and thought they would just shoot a really kitsche movie that would be soooooooo cool. It was not. This movie beats home every theme with a sledgehammer. OKAY, SO HE'S EMOTIONALLY UNSTABLE, BUT IT"S BECAUSE HE"S ON DRUGS. I FUCKIN' GET IT ALREADY!!!!!!!
And this movie has some dreadful acting, Zach Braff is like cardboard and Natalie Portman is way ove the top. Hey I just thought of something, maybe their performances cancel each other out to make one really good performance. No, not quite.
Bruce Springsteen remains as the only good thing to ever come out of New Jersey....

For the record I bumped it back a little bit. I couldn't rationalize having it ahead of Swingers and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. That said, I still think it's a A across the board. In his first attempt at a movie, Zach Braff made one of the finest coming-of-age dramas out there.

It's okay to not like it, but to honestly think it was a bad movie, is kind of puzzling to me. There is a difference between not liking a movie, and thinking a movie was bad. Death To Smoochy was a bad movie, I'd give it like a D+, but you can find it on my Top 100 'cause I absolutely loved the shit out of it. Sure, I could rationalize not liking Garden State, but I can't rationalize thinking it was bad movie, and neither can most of the Western World casting their votes on IMDB.com.

I can rationalize think it's bad...for the reasons that Colonel listed as well as a few more. It came off as completely forced. One scene after another with nothing going on save a blatant attempt at looking as if it has a deeper meaning. Each of these clips would probably singly go over well as a submission to a "Create a Symbolic 5-second clip" contest...but, when pasted together with random attempts at stupid humor (a dog masturbating...a car driving around with the gas nozzle in the tank...honestly, what the fuck?), it just doesn't work too well.

I think so many people like it because it does a good job of making people think that they should like it. It comes off as having a deeper meaning...and kinda sends the message that, if you get it and like it, you're not a superficial person...thus making it trendy to like the film. Unfortunately, I didn't see a deeper message. I just saw a bunch boring as hell scenes slathered together with some excessive symbolism...and I didn't like it.
