I originally made this post in KAVotD...but, after fucking with it a bit longer, I've decided it needs its own thread.

Wolfram Alpha is a new search engine. Why don't you watch a webcast of what it can do?

Then go play with it here.

Because it's very new, the load oftentimes shits out and gives you an error. If you refresh a few times, it normally goes away and does what you ask.

What answers has it given you?

I'm not impressed with this yet, but everything I've read about it is that it's got awesome potential.

Ya, I get a lot of "i don't know wtf that means" from it...but, on the question I form correctly, it's pretty amazing.

Shit like... "123,237,293,298th prime", for example, kind of impress me.

Once they really get down how to interpret what people are asking...it could get ridiculously badass.

This is something I never really understood (though I can't say I've put a lot of thought into it): Why does a planet have to be earth-like to have life on it?

Why is it completely out of the question for a life form to live in a condition that earth-like beings couldn't? Just because it didn't evolve that way here doesn't mean that it couldn't elsewhere...does it?

"Earth-like" is actually a pretty huge range of planets. There generally have to be within the Habitable zone, a so-called "Goldilocks planet" to have life on them.

That being said, yes, there is definitely a possibility for other life to exist...but being humans, we find it really really hard to imagine an intelligent civilization that wouldn't come from a planet similar to ours, seeing how difficult evolution is in the first place. You need to have LOTS of variety to evolve into such a complex being...and tons of planets don't support that kind of variety of life.
