I once had a cut of chicken at Nobu in Vegas so amazing that all of the other chicken I've had since has been less enjoyable. It's amazing how good food can be. I don't think most people (not being elitist, I was and largely still am one of "those people") have even tried enough good food to know what good food even is.

Aside from molecular gastronomy, has anyone been to and casually reviewed any cool new (or old) concepts/breweries/bars/fixtures in their local area? No chains, ie., Ruth's Chris, Cheesecake Factory, KFC (Blonde).

I was in Ft. Wayne last weekend and ate at this little dive called Venice. It doesn't look like much, but it's been around for at least 40 years, so they're probably doing something right. Turns out they are. Sure, the building is a piece of shit. The decor is lame. You don't come to Venice for those things. You come for the food, which is quite good. Everything is homemade. I had some sexy ravioli, and their meatballs are among the best I've ever had. Oh, and the price/food ratio cannot be beaten.

My parents were in town a few weeks ago and I spent the weekend showing them the most legit english restaurants I could find. Took them on Friday to the Harwood Arms, the first gastropub in London to get a michelin star. Had a scotch egg as an appetizer (hard-boiled egg, wrapped in ham, deep fried, salted.) That's fucking english. My dad had fried oysters which were served with a seaweed tartare sauce, really fucking good. For the mains, my dad and I each had lamb, my mom had a filet. The lamb won out. Pub food is pretty much the opposite of molecular gastronomy, it tends to be red meat in some sort of gravy, and lots of fresh vegetables. Other upsides: awesome beers and it was lunchtime and I wasn't in the office.

Sunday I took them (FC came too, and drove in his tank, I mean, commander) to the Yew Tree Inn. It was a pretty long drive, hour and change, almost all the way to wales, but probably worth it. The building it was in was probably the oldest non-church building I've ever been in. The chef is Pierre White, who used to be an up-and-comer back in the day but then he burnt out and retired to the english countryside. Now he has this one restaurant which mostly prepares food killed locally. By men with guns. I had roast venison, was really fucking good. Don't remember the appetizer, which means it was, apparently, forgettable. Worth the drive, although given the time it took it was probably a one-time experience.

The Scotch egg is... English?

I ate some fucking bomb Uzbeki food in the Russian/Western European area of Seoul last night. Really hearty and simple dishes, I hate a dish called "meat and potatoes" and also some Shurpa soup: Recipe: SHURPA

Any good bar/restaurant ideas? I'm thinking of starting one. And am not creative enough to come up with anything.

I'd really like to open a bar at some point. A friend of mine may be starting one in Boston, and I might get involved there. Not that I think it would be the greatest investment.

I have ideas like this as well, but obviously don't have the financial backing needed. What area are you looking to open a bar? A bigger city bar would need a different feel then a small town bar like in my hometown.

My buddy and I have tossed around an idea about a bar/restraunt idea that revolves around local sports. People around this area get off to their high school sports. We thought about having certain showings of old/meaningful high school games, and have specials revolve around that. During football season, market tailgates before Colts/Bears games. Pretty much in my opinion, a great sports bar and restraunt is ran by a big sports fan. It doesn't have to be I spose, but when the owner and operator love the world of sports, he is in touch with his customer base and knows how to market better then someone who could give 2 shits about a Cubs Sunday doubleheader.

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack your idea.

That's a pretty cool idea.

I've been thinking of this topic for a few days because a building with pretty solid location in Broad Ripple is for sale, and I found out beer/wine licenses are only $750 annually. I was leaning toward more of craft beer/regional wine/localvore type of establishment. Either way planning a restaurant is burdensome.

I'm not familiar with the Broad Ripple area, but there are never to many bars in that area. Is there another bar with the same niche as that one? I've only been down there once, and I can't remember a bar along those lines. Solid Idea!

I'm thinking more of a beer bar than the Brew Pub, less of a restaurant. The Brew Pub is awesome but their menu is large, its not open too late (I don't think), and it's further away from Broad Ripple Ave than the property that's for sale.

Beebs, you went to Butler. What do Butler students want that Broad Ripple doesn't already offer?

I think investing in a restaurant/bar is a bad idea right now. Everyone who watches the Food Network occasionally or has made a homebrew wants to open their own place. Foodie bubble IMO.

True dat. You're probably very right, and foodie bubble or not, restaurants tend to fail. My parents owned a restaurant for 17ish years, so I grew up in the industry, although that still doesn't mean I know anything. Small biz is getting fucked these days anyways.
