Go to the stores and lay on 15-20 different ones, then find the one you want and try to find a deal on it. You can usually negotiate the prices at those places.

I don't view sleep as a time waster at all. It's one of the most important things you can do. I view all of life as built on the foundation of a few very important things and a solid night's sleep is one of them.

I priced out my first mattresses today. There are some pretty pricey as fuck mattress out there for a hunk of soft shit to sleep on.
First stop was Mattress Firm. They had okay mattresses, but there was a place across the street that was already closed that I reckon would have cheaper beds. I only laid in one that I was interested in, but there was a 40-something salesguy there and mostly I just mined him for information about mattresses. For example, there are basically 4 types of firmness: Firm (hard -- the mattress guy said these usually get returned within a month, who the fuck sleeps on that shit?) Plush (Goldilocks shit -- what felt best to me) Pillow Top (soft as hell) Memory foam (Sarlacc but with really really soft teeth) The one I was interested in would have only been about $600 with spring, which is really all I care to spend on a mattress right now. Probably $700 maximum -- In a few years, I could see myself investing on a King that I could have for the next 20 years of my life, but if I could get a decent Plush for 600, throw a couple inches of memoryfoam padding on top of it from Costco, I'm pretty sure that would be a dream for me compared to what I have slept on most of my life (shit). That being said, I'm going to check out about 2-3 more local places before making a decision. It's not like the mattress industry is going anywhere. The only thing that sucked was the 1 on 1 of the Mattress guy vs. Me. I've always been a pretty weak/impulsive consumer and am just finally starting to flex my anti-sales balls; rather than avoid sales entirely which is pretty cowardly. It worked out well and the guy was actually pretty nice; I think he just wanted to get back to watching netflix. Anyways I know a mattress isn't a big deal to you guys but the only one I ever bought that wasn't taken off the street (ugh college) was like $200 from a shady clearance warehouse in Phoenix that probably had Chinese trash in it. All the others have been hand-me-downs of some sort. So it's kind of a big deal for me. |

Memory-Foam Mattress Deal of the Day | Groupon Abilene, TX
This deal seemed a bit too good to pass up on, so I bought one. Worst case scenario, if I don't like it, i'm fairly sure I could easily sell it on CL for more. |

If that's the worst case scenario we should go into the mattress business.

Thought about that, so I researched my impulse-buy more yesterday at work. At first, I was dismayed at even cheaper memory foam mattresses on Amazon.com, for example, then realized that quality was probably an issue with those.
When I was talking to a guy at Mattress Firm the other day, I asked about permanent impressions in memory foam, and he stated that you can usually tell whether or not the mattress is of a high enough quality or not by the warranty that comes with it. A cheap, $400 (without discount) priced memory foam mattress would probably only last a couple years before getting bumps and impressions in it. But I don't think that's the case with this one. Here is the manufacturer page for the mattress (not the Groupon one): Nature's Dream Series. Quote:

Don't be surprised when it's nearly impossible to collect on your warranty. There's always little loopholes like having to keep a mattress cover on it, having to have a certain kind of frame, etc. If it's as good a deal as you think, though, I'm hella jelly.

Good tip on the warranty. I have a 20-year on my Tempurpedic but there are the same loopholes, so I just got the exact things they require (cover and frame.) It cost me a little more, but the investment is worth a mattress that good and one that should last the next 20 years.

Mrs. Pancake just bought us some memory-foam with gel posturpedic having mattress. Along with an adjustable base that reclines and all that shit. I have no idea how the base is going to work as it's split for two sides to work, but the mattress is all one piece. I hope to fuck those in unison. I have no idea. Total damage about 6 grand. I was totally cool with the mattress I had. . . . . .and crashing on the la-z-boy recliner couch. Sucks if I'm going to have to spend more time sleeping with Mrs. Pancake. I kinda like my space.
