Repug, the main reason the economy was flourishing under Clinton is because he put in a whole bunch of policies that were destined to have a deadly response in the future, but make the current situation better (like FDR). The lending crash occurred because Clinton wanted every person to be able to own a home and forced banks to make risky lending to unqualified home owning prospects who never had a shot at success. A true president's legacy can't be defined in the present day, but must be observed when his policies have their consequences (good and bad) play out in the future. This is one aspect that liberals will never admit and just want to blame Bush for everything. Shit was prime to hit the fan because of Clinton's policies and Bush had to deal with 9/11 for years, instead of clean up Clinton's policy problems. Luckily our current congress is stopping much of Obama's horrific policies before they even start. We've seen what Obama can do (nothing to fix the economy) and luckily people are still voting against politicians who don't perform in office. Part of me is happy Obama was elected, because it woke up millions of dormant Americans and boosted liberty-minded folks into action. That part of me never expected a second term out of Obama, which would lead to a very, very destructive economic future for this country. For the record, Romney is just as bad, but in other ways.

Governor Brown considers cutting fucking science from high school curriculum! (Okay not completely, but the second year of it.) Important implication: "The other problem is University of California and Cal State both require two years of science for admission. So if you're in a school where you can't take that second class, it'll be tough to get in. " | |

I wouldn't know. I'm in London, where I can't watch that video. To answer UB's derailing post in my Queen thread, FC is in NYC (follow the Travel thread, n00b). FC was also an amazing host for the one night I saw him. I'm staying at his flat and he has several roommates, all of whom are quite smart and interesting to talk with. The only Olympic activity right now is futbol group play, which just started (I'm about to head to a bar to watch) and are being played everywhere BUT London. I wanted to see this, but will not be traveling two hours (how the hell would I even get there, and I have no ticket) and have stayed put in the city. The opening ceremony tickets are going for $2,700, so I won't be going for that either. I spent the first 48 hours taking in the city and when I get a tick, I have to rid of it; that tick was posting about Queen.

I should also point out that while FC can come across as a huge dick on nubblies, he's been a great and fun guy in person all three times I've been around him. Kremlin? I can't so much say, because he is ignoring that I'm in London.

I really don't think anybody is taking Obama's speech out of context. I posted the whole thing now and I'm worried about it in any form. Deep down Obama has always meant this but he finally slipped up and said it.

You're right, except the people who are taking it out of context wrongly. There are clearly two very defined sets of context here; those who agree with what he said at face value (which is correct) and those who think he's attacking business owners (which is incorrect).

To me the issue is that it is contradictory with his idea of taxation as a whole.
Generally, the left in this country is all about progressive taxes, based on the ability to pay. This makes sense to a certain extent, it fails in others, but that's not the issue. This speech, he seems to imply taxes should be similar to a user fee, which is based on benefits gained, and is a regressive tax in most cases. If his "pay because you use it" idea is followed to it's logical conclusion, then the tax rates for the people he is talking about, "the rich" are going to go way down. |

I wish I was taking it out of context, because quite frankly it's frightening to hear a president, who is probably going to be reelected, say this type of socialist propaganda on national television.
