How can it possibly take that long? How big are the games? I feel like you can download a couple GB file in what... an hour these days on a typical Internet connection? Faster than running to GameStop.

Maybe if you live in a first-world country like the United States.

Average US speed is 15Mbps(taken from Ookla which uses speedtest.net..not too accurate) so a 50gig blu-ray will take 10 hours. When the average speed reaches towards the top end speed cable networks are offering (100/150Mbps over there?) and it takes 45 minutes to download a blu-ray the time should come. with 100mbps speeds there's no reason why you couldn't stream the game and play it whilst downloading.

No matter how much people insist on shit like this, it will never happen ... people are in the business of making money, eliminating a 25% of your potential customer base is bad business when it comes to big-budget video game productions.

Disc-less doesn't mean that there will be no way of going to a brick and mortar and purchasing the game, but maybe the brick and mortar would only need to be vending machine size and maybe use a SSD or something to transfer the games you want in no time. Maybe it'll be some other way, but 'it will never happen' will be happening

Inversely, players like being able to take their games over to a friend's house. They like having a backup for their games, and not everyone has a high speed internet connection. As time progresses, the discrepancy between urban and rural internet speeds will only continue to grow, so it will be unrealistic to expect to sell download-only games to those people.

With cloud computing you don't need to take games over to a friends house, and it's all backed up anyway. As for the rural market, it was only the other year that over 50% of the world now live in cities, that % will increase for the foreseeable future, the rural market is getting less important. Satellite speeds are getting pretty quick, why wouldn't they be able to transfer data to rural areas? Ultra Mobile Broadband - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia "In theory 672 Mbit/s is possible" - wow a blu-ray drive is going to be seen as being cumbersome at some point, all that space can be used more efficiently. Edit : anyone that wants to live deep inside a cave in the middle of nowhere in 10 years is welcome, but I don't want the costs to produce his ultra-ray disc to increase price if bought online

Discs (or physical media in general) aren't going anywhere anytime soon. I lived in an apartment for 6 months without internet access at all. Yes, these places still exist, and lots of the world simply doesn't have good internet access.
