If I was God I would condemn all fake people to hell, along with Republicans. I would also permit the killing of homosexuals, see this is what Bush really wants to do but everytime he goes to call a press conference to announce it his P.C. advisors advise him against it. I personally don't like the man; however, I would like him a lot more if he would go on national television and anounce a new amendment to the constitution permitting the bashing and killing of "gays", "fags", and or "queers." Also, poker should be played by all. Amen.

To their credit, both uses are becoming accepted. Indeed, they can even have slightly different connotations:

"If I were Jesus"

Carries a slightly less active connotation than

"If I was Jesus"

It's a little hard to grasp, but "If I was Jesus," asserts more of an ability to act upon Jesus's position, whereas "If I were Jesus," is lesser so - rather you are closer to merely living Jesus's life.

It's not black and white, but a slight distinction in connotation exists. And yes, some modern grammar texts accept both usages.

Well in a formal setting, you should always use "were," but it's only a matter of time until even that is unecessary. Some newer grammar books are using them equally.
