I think there should be a way for both BDH and Repug to lose, because I'm not terribly confident in either...

So, is this going to happen or not. There has been no mention of the actual challenge since Repug accepted. What are the stakes? What's the challenge? | |

I've been thinking about this a bit- my thoughts:
I think a multi-faceted competition is a must. Even three events would not suffice. I think a "best of" method, using 5, not more than 7, individual competitions. Ideas below... Chess Match (simple enough, a traditional battle of wits) Math Test (roughly 20 questions, starting at retard easy and progressing through Calculus) Creative Writing (same topic for both, 30 minute time limit, a reading/vote determines winner) Puzzle Solving (multi-stage enigma: something along the lines of Codebreaker NOC #9) Knowledge Base (variety of common questions: who shot a.hamilton?, how many is in a baker's dozen? shit like that.) These are just ideas. A more straigtforward system would be 5 tests in 5 subjects (math, english, history, science, variety). Or even better yet, a combination of both, using both written tests and skill demonstration. In my opinion, the real goal here is the entertainment of non-participants ![]() |

I think it's a good idea and what you've proposed seems fair enough, but I do have some comments.
-The chess match is a good idea, because I know repug plays the crap out of chess and BDH has already agreed to it. Nothing to add. -Math is fair because it is an actual science. Plus it seems fitting being that the closest we've come to measuring intelligence thus far is based on a quotient anyway. -Creative writing is a bit subjective... I guess we could have them both submit like a short story or something for us to vote on, but it seems to me that intelligence would be better judged on things like grammar, sentence structure, etc. I think that topic is a landslide for repug in either scenario though... -Puzzle solving is a really good idea. I have a couple of LSAT study books with shit tons of practice logic games in them that could be used, and therefore would be relatively google proof. They range from retard easy to "come on man, what the fuck?" hard. -Knowledge based questions IMO are the weakest subject because a 10 second google search would lead to most answers too easily. Any suggestions on how to curb that? Quote:

Is a face-to-face meeting out of the question?
If so, I'd say two "supervisors" would be needed to oversee each person while taking the test, just so they can't cheat. If this will be an internet only event, make it happen in real time. Create "competition thread" that only Repug, BDH, and Orgazmo can post in- the questions come one at a time, they post answers. In this way both the answer and speed will be plain for all to see. Of course a "comment" thread would be needed so we can follow the action and laugh at them. On the "subjective" note. If we want a truly objective test, we'd give them a bunch of college-paper exams. That's pretty boring, and imo only represents "book knowledge". What good is knowing all about female biology and reproduction if you can't find the clit and get yr girl off? Just an example, I realize we can't test that, but if ever there was a group of assholes who act like the subjective is objective, its Nubblies. |

I think there's roughly an entire country between them, so a face to face is probably out of the question.
As the the real time event, I think that would be a good idea. We'd still need someone (probably Gaz) to proctor it, just to make sure all is on the up and up. The question could be posted, then whoever answers it first wins. The question would have to expire after 20 seconds or something though... That might be sketchy though because I've noticed if I take too long on a particular post, it wont post. I usually have to leave the thread, come back, and paste it again. That would definitely lose someone the round. I think we're certainly getting closer though... I have my last final today so tomorrow will be mostly dedicated to internetting. I officially volunteer to start organizing the question bank. Any takers on helping out here? |

Some of these are good ideas and others not so much. But I really want you guys to be able to furiously masturbate to our epic competition, so here's my suggestions to make it happen:
The chess match seems to be a popular idea, and I'm all for it. I'm not exactly a grand master and I doubt the disparity between BDH and I in this department is that much. Math is another good suggestion, though I'm quite certain I'll be slaughtered in this category. Creative writing is a terrible idea. A better suggestion would be grammar, spelling, or punctuation challenges - something to do with the technical, objective elements of writing. I'd be down for something more linguistically inclined though, like what is a past participle, or a gerund, etc... Puzzling solving is a good one, although it seems pretty closely related to chess. Both require you to conceptualize space. Knowledge based questions, as stated by IM, are good but only if BDH and I are bound by the honor system of no cheating i.e. googling. Might I also suggest a vocabulary category. It will make me feel validated in knowing words like nugatory. |

You never pay attention to me! I already suggested using grammar instead of creative writing. You acknowledged that I mentioned cheating on the knowledge based questions, but missed that this has already been resolved, by having this portion of the competition in the chat room. It's like my feelings are nugatory.

grammar sucks, I would be destroyed. I hate almost everything having to do with it outside of spelling. I'm an above average speller.
We could start with the chess match here soon. |

Psychedelics are illegal not because a loving government is concerned that you may jump out of a third story window. Psychedelics are illegal because they dissolve opinion structures and culturally laid down models of behavior and information processing.
