The feeling on the ground, from twitter, is that this was pre-planned; the ultras of Al-Ahly are quite political and were active in the revolution this spring. Security forces in the stadium appeared to be actively avoiding helping.

I think this represents something off the field, and I think it's going to make an impact there as well.

So over 74 died and 1,000 injured but how? Did they really stone that many people to death?

This is incredible.

A much bigger story than "Football breaks out into violence"

74 people dead!? That's worse than most battles in Iraq/Afghanistan.

It basically has nothing to do with football, other than the Ultras happen to watch the game, they were leaders during the revolution.

Ultras groups can make for a homemade army quickly, it happened with Arkan's Tigers in the Yugoslav wars, and the Bara Brava can be bought as cheap muscle in Argentina.
