Im looking to get a PS2... I was wondering though. Does online play using your ps2 have a subscription or monthly fee? I know certain games do, such as everquest, but does playstation itself actually charge you anything?

I'm not certain. Yes Everquest does as you pointed out. I am still unsure. But from a system standpoint, I have both an X-Box and PS2 in my crib and I like PS2 better.
So I wasn't help in answering the question, but good choice Nathan. |

Ya, although the built in harddrive, memory card, and bulky controllers were tempting, I still think that ps2 has better game potential. Plus my friends have ps2s, not xboxes, so nothing would be compatible.
Im just trying to keep my options open, and I really have a hard time playing a game single player anymore now adays, so if the online shit is free for most games, ill probably buy the adapter. [ February 01, 2004, 09:31 PM: Message edited by: Nathan ] |

All games on ps2 are free to play online if you get the box and put it on the back of your console...it is amazing too...i can play madden 2004 with my dial up connection and it still runs smooth...plus socom online is incredible...just another reason why Ps2 is better then xbox....Now only if PS2 could have halo

Ya I just bought my ps2 today. I bought the bundle pack, comes w/ the PS2, controller, ATV offroad fury 2, and the network adapter for only $200. The other one was just the PS2 and a controller for $180... So im paying 20 bucks for the adapter and another game, sounds ilke a good deal to me.
I jumped on madden online and got my ass kicked, but was still fun. I think its better then playing the computer too, and probably will make me better at the game then the AI would. |

Well Nathan let me break this down for you now that you have already gone and wasted your money on a PS2.
First off Xbox, contrary to the typical stereotype, comes with a standard controller that is small, it is called the controller-s this has been a standard for almost 2 years now. Next gaming potential, i really dont see how you got this one. Take into careful consideration that PS2 has the greatest amount of third party developers, which basically means every game you can get on PS2, you can get on Xbox or Gamecube. The only games (of the top of my head) that dont cross systems on PS2 are the ones made by Sony (Socom), and Final Fantasy (sony has a contract keeping them exclusive). From this we can conclude that Xbox will have a greater majority of the popular games than PS2, and it has a quite a few first party exclusive developers such as biostar, the makers of Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic the RPG of the year, Rare, Lionhead Studios, and Bungie. If you move to consider the gaming potential from a techinal standpoint Xbox by far, by far is superior to the PS2, Halo for example couldnt run on PS2, because it fails to support standard graphic techniques such as bump maping, antilasing, vertex shading, etc. Just take a look at a Halo 2 screenshot, or even the in-game video, and it puts any PS2 game to shame. Thats probably enough for now, if you dont believe me i can elaborate. Finally, the online gaming service is a joke for the PS2, it was created only to compete with Xbox Live. Here are a solid 7 reasons why Xbox Live is better... 1. More Games The only games the support Sony's online service are that of EA, and those made by Sony. Which doesnt exactly give you much to choose from. Xbox will have 50 out by the end of next year, not including those made by EA, which just recently announced they would develop for Xbox Live. 2. More Players. By the end of this finicial quarter Xbox Live is projected to have over 1 million users, making it by far the most popular online gaming service. This makes finding online games, easier, encourages more support from developers, and leads to greater competition. 3. Downloadable Content The little harddrive you bypassed, allows for downloadable content, something you wont find on Sony's service. Some of the content you'll find is additional levels, roster updates for sporting games, added vechiles for racing games, and saved games if you're stuck on a level. Splinter Cell for example released 3 exclusive levels for Xbox Live. 4. Stat Tracking/Rankings This is probably my favorite feature, after every time you play an online game, your stats are uploaded to Xbox Live servers, and compared agains other players. Crimsion Skies will upload stats based on the gametype you play, how many kills you get vs the number of deaths, while factoring in the level of competition you are playing against. Nothing is more addicting than trying to better your World ranking, i for one was hooked on this game for the better part of January trying to increase ranking above 31st. 5. Tournaments Using the results constanly tracked from your gameplay, you can get the opprotunity to compete in online tournaments. You'll be automatically seeded and you'll be notified of your game time and your opponent. There are also cash prizes involved in the tournaments the winner of the Xbox Sports Network NFL fever tourney won 25,000. 6. Buddylists You can manually add friends to your list in any of the games you play. It even goes as far to temporarily store players you just played with if you forgot to add them befoe they left your gaming room. The buddylists allow you to invite your friends to join your game. They could be playing PGR2, while you are hosting a room for NFL Fever, and they'll be notified of your invite in the middle of the game, and have the option to join up immeaditely with you. 7. Voice Communication I'm getting tired so an overview.. -Cell Phone quality -No fucking typing -Ability to block annoying 12 year olds. -Voice Masking -Ability to control your game. Rainbow 6 III uses voice recognition in single player to issue commands to your team. [ February 05, 2004, 02:46 AM: Message edited by: buckeye ] |

Buckeye for those who dont care about RPG and other dumbass shit like legends of the doom temple games or whatever the hell they are PS2 is the way to go....personally i hate those games and only play sports games...and 989 games are now online as well...even though 989 couldnt whip EA's ass in anything....but ps2 has a great system of online games and also have tourney's and stuff...and its ALL FREE!!! Also you gotta get clarett to stop talking to gamblers...he is the pete rose of college football [ February 05, 2004, 08:54 AM: Message edited by: Shaw ] |

So PS2 is to go for what type of exclusive games? Thats what i was getting at. Xbox has more exclusives, and better games period.
Thats great that 989 is online now, big deal they suck. Xbox now has EA, XSN, and Sega sports games, plus we have roster updates for our games, unlike yours. You still have to pay for the network adapter? do you not? We never had to pay for that or our harddrive. As for clarett begin the "pete rose of college football," thats a load of bullshit. His friend was the one betting not him, he had no knowledge of him placing bets on sporting games. He has know this guy since he was in middle school, and he has been supporting clarett since then. Clarret listed him as a benifactor, so any money he did recieve is perfectly legal, since the NCAA already knew, and approved this going on. What needs to happen is the press neeeds to lay off his ass, they are just fucking jealous of OSU success with him. Its ridiculous how they are blowing up every little incident that occurs with him. The NYTimes writer who spurred the investigation has since been fired, for writing false articles in the paper. Funny how that works out. The media can suck a cock, just let him play already. |

I suppose you could say I paid for my network adapter. Even though a regular ps2 set is $180, while the network adapter one is $200, and it comes with ATV offroad fury 2. I actually enjoyed the first offroad fury, so that really wasn't that bad of a deal for the extra $20.
I dont really care what all the statistics and bullshit say. All of my friends have ps2's opposed to xbox's. Besides, you would never see me wasting money every month just to play games online from a xbox. |

THEY GOT SO DAMN LUCKY THIS YEAR..WOW...they should have won like 6 games....they did win though i guess....but were very overrated |
