Couple years ago I switch from ATT to charter for internets because i needed a cable package.
I called ATT a couple times to cancel my service. First time they said ok we'll cancel it but after 2 months I was still getting bills - during which i was using new service. I called them again and they said they couldn't find my account, I told the little fucker on the phone, welp alright I'll block the payment from my bank. I did just that, the third month I put a stop payment on it. I then eventually got a letter from a collections agency asking for payment, I send them a letter contending the claim and tell them to fuck off. I get a new letter now every 4-6 months or so from a collection agency under a different name, I send them a letter letting them knowing I dispute their claim, rince and repeat. I just got one last week that says "hey att has offered settle for 50%" send us 25 bucks. So what do I need to do to get ATT to stop harassing me without giving another fucking penny to them? I think they're abusing the system using shell claims agencies until I slip up and don't dispute, then they'll probably garnish my wages or something. if they want their 20 bucks they can try to sue me. Or repossess the internets they think I have hidden under my mattress. |

You've only called att once since this started happening? Well, that might be the problem. You probably talked to someone who had been there a week and didn't know wtf they were doing.
Calling again would be the first thing I would do. You might get the same result this time since it's already in collections, but it seems like it's worth a shot. |

By the by, freecreditreport.com is a rip-off. They try to enroll you into a program where you pay monthly got credit score monitoring. You get 3 free credit reports per year from https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp, which is the official site without the bullshit. You do have to pay if you want the actual score, but they don't try to enroll you into a program.

UPDATE: the agencies started calling me and in a moment of weakness I eventually agreed to pay them like 50 bucks over the phone to get them off my back. It must have counted as an admission of “guilt” or whatever. After I paid it, it started showing up on my credit report and fucked with my credit score for years until it dropped off.
