Default thekremlin's and Yoshi's home bar thread

So we are moving to a new and sexy apartment next friday. The first thing I plan to do after we move in is go to London's largest liquor store and stock my new home bar.

Part one, what do you recommend we pick up? We will get all the obvious ones. My favorite spirit is rum, so there will be lots of rum for sure. I'm also very excited about getting my hands on some primo british gin. And absinthe is much more common here than it was in Chicago, so I'm excited to try a few different kinds.

Once we have that established, does anyone have any cocktails they have figured out that work well? The one I posted earlier (the raj) is a simple one but it went through like five different recipes before I settled on old monk and canton's. (It was originally an haitian rum with a ginger brandy called mohawk... which had the quality of de kuypers schnapps.) Anyway I haven't found Old Monk in London yet. At bars here I have been ordering Sazeracs, which is a treat because most chicago bars don't even have absinthe.

OK go.

Sailor Jerry and The Kraken.

As for mixed drinks, I'm a White Russian (Dude) and Mudslide fan, but both require cream or milk and that can be a pain in the ass.

If you really want to damage your heart, may I suggest the following:

I can honestly say I had never heard of Sailor Jerry's until 3 nights ago, it is actually a very pleasant liquor. Another to add to the collection is some Captain Morgan. If you enjoy rum, I'm sure this will be included in the stock, but if you want to please any lady company, it's a fairly smooth drink to satisfy any pallet.

Sailor Jerry is very good. Captain Morgan once convinced me to bite a lightbulb, so there's that. I definately recommend Old Monk to anyone in the states. And no one should ever mix it with coke.

Darker, much darker, rums definately have their place as well. Most people prefer Gosling's, which is one of the two ingredients in a true Dark n Stormy.

Two days until we move and buy the bar supply. I'm atwitter with excitement.

What crack are you smoking?

If you enjoy rum you won't have Captain Morgan anywhere near your collection and any woman who will drink Captain Morgan certainly is not a lady.

My 3 favorite so far:

Finally, an update.
We have just begun to stock the bar. So far, we have a bottle of woodford reserve, a bottle of pimm's (a UK must), a martini and rossi vermouth, J+B whiskey, a local craft gin, and some angostura bitters. It is a modest start but it lets us make a few standard cocktails until I get to a real liquor store (hopefully this weekend.)
Last night I wanted to make an old-fashioned to sip while I made dinner. When I went to the fridge for some soda water, I saw there was none. This is funny, since I bought some this weekend. I'm looking at you, Mr. DJFC. So instead of soda, I topped it off with Ginger Beer. The ginger beer I've been getting here is much more flavorful than what I got in the States... it's a very strong, aggressively smoky flavor, even the generic brands. The drink was very good... I used J+B whiskey, which is as smokey as it gets, and it combined very well with the ginger beer. Since I wanted to make an old-fashioned but failed, I'm calling it the New-Fangled.

The New-Fangled
In a chilled old-fashioned glass (the type you would drink scotch on the rocks from), place a large brown sugar cube. (To chill the glass, leave it in the freezer for a few minutes, or let some ice water sit in it for a few). Pour three or four drops of angostura bitters on it, which should be enough to mostly soak through the cube. Pour two shots of J+B whiskey on top. Using a muddler or a wooden spoon, crush the sugar cube and stir gently. (The reason the recipe calls for a double shot is to dissolve the cube totally, otherwise you're going to end up with a sludge at the bottom of your drink.) Top with two shots of ginger beer, the more fiery, the better. Garnish with some lemon peel. Cut the peel off the lemon while holding it over the drink, so that some of the citrus sprays over the glass.

I like this better than an old-fashioned because it doesn't involve a cherry and is smoky instead of sweet. So men drink it.

Had some people over last saturday night before going out to a nightclub. I am not traditionally a big nightclub person, so I decided I wanted to "hype myself up" a little bit. So my goal for the night was to design a cocktail that had red bull as the main ingredient but didn't taste like shit. The result was pretty successful, naming the drink a "Fruitfly" because that's what we had in our apartment the next day because we drank them and went to the club without cleaning.

The Fruitfly

In a tall 20oz glass, fill 3/4 with ice. Add a shot and a half of good rum (we used Pusser's 12yr old) and a shot of cointreau. Add to the glass 6-9 slices of nectarine, peach, or something similar. Fill the rest of the glass with Red Bull.

Variant: If you are using peaches, before you pour the red bull, toss some sage and thyme on top of the peaches. It works.

Note: Cocktails this weekend will mostly be red bull and vodka, probably sangria, lots of tequila shots, hopefully out of belly buttons. Because we're going to Ibiza.
