Default I think it's official.

California's Proposition 8 to amend the state constitution to ban gay marriages passed. Roughly 54% of the state's population voted not to not give them the right, but to take away their existing right, as protected by the state's constitution. There is some level of illogical hate that I just don't understand here... When you ask people why their against it, the married people will give you their template answers of, "it takes away from the meaning of my marriage." When you ask why or how, the standard is usually, "I don't know, I just don't think it's right."

The other side you get are the "this country was built on Chrisitianity" types. Yes well it was also built on slavery, and now a black dude is our president elect.

It's just amazing to me that in this day and age we as a society (which California represents a liberal side of) can actually take such a big step forward in the racial equality department, only to outdo ourselves in the hypocrisy department. Why not just come out and say, "Ok, we don't mind that you're black anymore, just don't be gay."

Creeping around as I please nonchalantly like any other Supreme Emperor might.

Yeah, it's ridiculous. I'm so tired of religious folks using religion to justify bigotry. Gays should be allowed to marry, not just get civil unions. We've seen this idea of separate but equal before, and it's always ugly.

The argument I hear most is that marriage is a religious institution, and since, yes, Christianity is full of anti homosexual ideologies, it's inappropriate for gays to marry. Well, sure, if you want to hitch your wagon to that star of bigotry then go right ahead, but my counter argument is this: marriage has become secularized. Non religious people get married all of the time. Not only that, but the benefits of marriage, like tax breaks, goes beyond any mere religious rhetoric.

No matter how people spin it, or how apologist they try to be, there are some very backwards ideas in the Bible, that I don't think can rationally be justified. Just as blacks can't help being black, so too can gays not help being gay. Homophobia is equal to racism.

But you'll often hear the argument that they can help it, but choose to be gay.

They're already in the process of discovering that a lot of who were are is genetically pre-determined.

But lets say for arguments sake that they CAN decide to be gay or not. Is there any argument outside of religion that you've heard? "That's disgusting" doesn't count.

I haven't. They base their hate and fear solely on religious convictions, i.e. God says it's bad therefore it's bad.

It's amazing how I can feel so proud of my country, and at the same time embarrassed.

We have a similar bill in AZ called prop 102 that succeeded too....gay...no pun intended

Psychedelics are illegal not because a loving government is concerned that you may jump out of a third story window. Psychedelics are illegal because they dissolve opinion structures and culturally laid down models of behavior and information processing.

Why does government really give a hoot? I like the idea of staying out of people's personal lives. What does this do to all of those who already got married? Can't work as an ex-post facto.

Also saw where Arkansas passed a measure that disallows "unmarried couples" to adopt or act as foster parents. That seems to be throwing out the baby with the bathwater.
