i tell you one thing that's gay about gis:
holy shit is was hot last night. it was a packed house too. i don't mind rolling in the heat w/ a gi on but we've been getting a flood of newer students from the gym. all the sons of bitches are at LEAST 210lbs. they can't pass my guard thank God. but we have to drill and having these guys on top of you wearing gis is not pleasant. what's even worse is rolling w/ the guys that may be lighter but know how to hold position. |

not necessarily. there is a difference between maintaining position and stalling.
stalling would be where i take a position and have no intention of moving from it and no intention of going for a sub. where as maintaining a position or pinning you'd be looking for a submission. learning how to keep side control/top position is important. with a larger or skilled opponent, you'll have to wear them down before you can catch them. so that means either crushing them from top or staying ahead of their escapes so they get tired, frustrated, or panicked enough to start making mistakes. |

if you want to be a great gi player, then wear the gi. if you want to be a great no gi player, then dont wear the gi. it really is that simple. the two sports are diverging in such a way that in 10 years you will see that they are like the difference between judo and freestyle wrestling.
yes, there will be some crossover, but not how it is now. |

i'm not really concerned w/ competing. i'm more interested in self-defense/vale tudo. and in PA, half the time people are wearing jackets, sweatshirts, etc... so the gi does apply to my situation.
i think the gi is good for everyone for at least the first year of training. it helps slow new guys down so they have to pay attention to detail. when you make a mistake w/ the gi, its very apparent when you fuck up. when you're new, no gi allows you to get away with sloppy technique sometimes without paying for it. that being said, this is the first year that i've really focused on my no gi and given it equal time (no counting VT classes). its much more difficult in the sense that you're timing and set ups have to be tight. i see my self devoting more time to no gi in the near future as i need to catch my no-gi game to my gi game. i can't control & sub larger guys the way i want to. |

"i'm not really concerned w/ competing. i'm more interested in self-defense/vale tudo. and in PA, half the time people are wearing jackets, sweatshirts, etc... so the gi does apply to my situation." i agree
" i see my self devoting more time to no gi in the near future as i need to catch my no-gi game to my gi game. i can't control & sub larger guys the way i want to. " you will learn the importance of hooks. they are your best friend in catching guys without the gi. |

yeah, i know what you mean.
i've been working x guard, 93 guard, butterfly guard, ashy larry guard, etc... i'm trying to drill & roll as much as i can to get fluidity. i've also been working the arm drag a ton. |

the 93 guard is difficult without the gi. it severly limits your ability to control the pass. i run right through that when people pull it on me, which only gi players do.
the most important things are having double underhooks from all positions on the bottom. and over under from all positions on top. guard exempted in both cases. |

so far, i've only been using 93 guard to transition to x-guard. in which case, i think it serves nicely. many guys try to pass to the open side which actually helps me get to their far leg.
guard passing is pretty frustrating right now too. all my guard passes work no-gi. however, due to a fate, in a 4 month timespan we now have 4 purple belts training at our school. this is heaven for me b/c i'm sick of constantly rolling with my instuctor. a few of them are familiar w/ my passes and are shutting them down. not having gi pants to pass butterfly guard and having to deal w/ hooks has caused me to have refine some of my passes and add some new ones. this is a major pain in the ass as i consider guard passing one of the better aspects of my game... |

it will get there. use the stacking pass if you really cant do anything (where you scoop under both his legs, stack him, and pass to one side)
