I was more thinking that a bar fight would not be a 1 v 1 kinda thing. I sure as fuck can believe that Bjj is effective if it IS 1 v 1, but that is why I picked a bar fight. I thought my selection of this type of fight made it obvious, but I forgot how low the IQ of the posters on this thread are. Incredible Dork seems to be the only person who can follow a post that is written at a dumbed-down 8th grade level. Silly me, I'll spell everything out next time, kinda like I have to do in this post. Is this better Repug and Beebs? DJFC?

I dont study bjj, but beebs and repug are correct with many of their points, in my oppinion:

Just the possibility of someday being in a fiight makes bjj an asset, and an asset is a good thing.

Nice pattern of logic, Beebs.

For me, lifting weights or wanting to learn to box are more than 99% about just wanting to look healthy, feel healthy, etc. Sure, there's a very small part of it that is kinda nice knowing I might be able to handle myself in a fight; but let's be honest, putting in all that fucking work just so you can be prepared in case you ever get in a fight is pretty fucking pointless.

I would hope that the majority of the reason you JJ guys practice this sport is either because you do it to be healthy or get off on rolling around with other guys. Doing it solely to "know how to fight in case you ever get in one" is pretty fucking stupid given the amount of time you spend on it.

I figured this argument would be coming, but it's terrible and I'll tell you why:

You are on nubblies right now. There is little if any long-term benefit to you for doing this. Essentially you are wasting a valuable asset (time) on nubblies, for your immediate entertainment.

People who train bjj may do it because they have free time, they enjoy it, or they like to stay healthy.

But the long-term benefit of self defense/confidence can be far reaching, and the insurance policy that they provide would clearly be worth the training for a great deal of people. It may actually save your life someday.

So don't accuse me of "failing to ponder" something before you spout off with something completely asinine, because I'm sure your skydiving shit does less for you than bjjers get out of training. You might get your jollies off for a couple seconds, and you may have some long term insight (don't get me wrong, these are all important things), but bjjers get a long-term asset.

Obviously knowing how to fight isn't the only reason to do jiu jitsu, it's just the most obvious answer to a question "why would you want to do that?" when asking about a fighting style. All the reasons you listed for boxing and lifting apply to jiu jitsu, plus meeting new people, having something to compete in, getting away from all the other bullshit in your life, keeping yourself mentally sharp, plus its just fun most of the time. You can want to learn how to fight for reasons other than bar room brawls, there are different tournaments and such. Of course in the end, learning a fighting style should always be based around learning to use it, otherwise it's just aeorobics, but plently of other positive stuff comes along with it, thats why I gave the answer I did.

I gave the response I did because, despite however gay it might look, it is effective. If you are mature enough and not worried about closet cases calling you gay, you get all the benefits listed above, plus the ability to fight effectively.

People train in lots of combat sports for a lot of different reasons. Secondly, how many people get into beach brawls or fights that are solely 1 v 1? My whole point with the bar fight comment, is that sure bjj will work in a single person battle (I've said this before), but if you are using bjj on my friend and have him on the ground, I'm going to bash a bottle over your head. If you have him in an arm-bar, I'm going to stomp on your face. To me, that just doesn't seem worth it. A broken face to break an arm.

So you're saying no one's reason for participating in JJ is mostly because they get their kicks on rolling around with other guys? Simple fact of the matter is; even if only 2% of the people practicing your sport are doing it because they like the intimacy with other men, then it should be pointed out that your sport is kinda homoerotic.

Ironic Mustache knows all and tells all. At least knows some and guess about the rest. If this is the same guy I think it is, a while back there were people saying Eddie Bravo didn't fight in the ADCC because he was scared he couldn't back up his performance against Royler the previous year. In actuality he was injured but people love talking shit. I think it was mostly Alberto Crane's students vs Bravo's. Bloodyfart was defending his teacher, things got out of control, they tried to make it some kind of superfight at a local tournament but it never happened.
