Anybody watch the fight last week-end? My brother and I both thought GSP would win as evidence by the way he manhandled BJ Penn and Frank Trigg. I however did not forsee that absolute ass-whooping he layed on Hughes. I've never seen a fighter whos been so dominant get absolutely dominated but the contender.
GSP may go down as one of the best in the history of MMA if he stays hungry, anyone agree? |

I was pulling for Hughes, but GSP put on a clinic. Nut shots sucked, but don't think it changed much.
Hughes needs to give up any pretense of even considering standing and trading with anybody if he wants to be champ again. GSP could be champ for a long time. |

Part of what makes Hughes so dominant is that he's a superior athlete, combine that with his wrestling and he's a bad matchup for almost anybody. With BJ Penn he won the second fight purely by athleticism and conditioning (clearly Penn is the more skilled fighter). But with GSP he's not the superior athlete, and he's not the more skilled fighter. Hughes has only recently been working a lot on his stand up, but he's still too one demensional. At 33 he's got plenty of time, but I just read an interview with him saying he wanted to fight two or three more fights and then retire. It sounds like he's lost his hunger and the fire no longer burns...Maybe this is what will spark him back to life.

Hughes is still more skilled on the ground than GSP I think. Forget well rounded, he's in his 30s, he's not ever gonna have the standup he wishes he had. Matt needs be like filho and arona and 100% commit to taking the other guy down at any and all costs, and doing it as soon as possible. If you lose that way, at least you gave yourself a shot by doing what you are best at.

I honestly think GSP/Hughes is dead even on the ground, did you watch the way GSP dominated Frank Trigg...Hughes never ever looked that impressive vs. Trigg not to mention that GSP took it to Penn pretty easily as well. I think we can all agree GSP is far superior in the stand-up game but from a ground standpoint they're even. I just think GSP is a better all-around fighter and by a marginal amount.

I could see that too, it might just be because Hughes groundwork is so much better than his standup it seems better than GSP's groudwork which is closer to his standup, or just my being a fan of Hughes.
GSP is certainly a badass anyway you slice it though, no question. |
