Default My elbow

I may have posted about it a couple times before, basically about 3-4 years ago i hyperextended it (i think) from drunken boxing with a guy bigger than me at the time, (Mish) who unfortunately knew NOTHING about boxing, and he ended up stretching the fuck out of my arm and hyperextending my elbow (i think). I never got it checked out because i'm an idiot, and it's hurt from time to time, mostly during working out, but it's been liveable until recently. I had it X-rayed last year and nothing is wrong w/ the bones, so i'm going into an orthopedic sports medicine place tomorrow to get it checked out (MRI probably), because it's been hurting progressively more.

I'm hoping i'll be able to get by w/ physical therapy or something like that, because if I have surgery, i'm going to be depressed as hell not being able to work out for however long it takes me to heal.

Has anyone had an elbow injury similar to this, and if so, how long did it take to heal (until you could lift again) after treatment? I'm really apprehensive.

If i can't work out for a long period of time, i'm going to be even more insane about working out than I am now once i get back into the swing of things.

You are expected to abide by a certain set of rules when you are boxing, just like you can't travel in basketball, can't use your hands in soccer, etc....when someone bigger than you overpowers you, grabs your arm with both hands and like bends it over his shoulder, there's not much you can do about it.

That sucks dude...It's just like when you're grappling someone, they catch you with an armbar and crank it too hard before you can tap. Hurts like a bitch.

I have a congenital defect in my elbows that restricts me from rotating them fully.

I cannot turn my palms upwards with my hands out, or touch my shoulders (with the same arm for each shoulder).

It kind of pisses me off, but doesnt hurt.

Interesting. I didn't know that. Does it really hinder you from doing anything specific?

i do and i got it from teaching someone how to throw a jab when the elbow hyperextension happened. it's been about 5 years now and i consider it tendonitis as i have to extend my arm to "click" the ulna and radius back into place otherwise my arm locks out and can be quite painful.

no surgery or rehab as its not that big an issue. i will wear an elbow brace when working out (exercising, bjj and boxing) and ice it if its painful.

Yes. I cannot hold a fork or spoon properly and look like a caveman when I eat. I'm affraid it's going to hinder my career prospects someday because I eat like a barbarian.

I also cannot hold a tray out in front of me, the way a waiter does. I cannot hold on to a pull up bar the correct way, and my swing in Tennis isn't traditional (but I play anyways).

Hmmm, anytihng else. Oh yeah it's hard as fuck to use chopsticks.

granted, i didnt know near as much as i do now....3 or 4 years ago, when it happened. Nothing like getting fucked up to make you motivated to get better.

EDIT: Subsequently, i started going to a gym here in muncie to learn my basics the following year, my sophomore one, and then got my own equipment.

Are you sparing? I ask because you said "basics", I dont know how they do it in Muncie but in Philly basics are the first couple weeks (footwork, punches, steping with puinches, bobing & weaving, ect.) pretty much after that those things become a warm up and sparing is where you learn from there. If you are not sparing yet, start. I've learned punched in the head is the best motivation in learning how to really box.

i did get to sparring after a while, then training for about a year, gave up attempting it competitively because of my elbow. hence the subject of this thread. If I end up getting it better, i'll try to go back into it again, but it was too difficult to do it as hard as i would be, i could only stand to do it in moderation to stay in shape, but I can't even do that anymore.

Blonde, I had my left elbow hyperextended at least three times (I'm only counting the ones where loud snaps were heard).

First time it took me about 8 weeks until I could do push ups and bench without pain...the subsequent ones didn't take as long..I never did anything besides icing and taking it easy.

It still gets painful from time to time and there's always a little grinding going on when I exercise, but nothing I can't live with, and definitely not the worst injury ever.

this is a common karate/kung fu injury. throwing strikes in the air without hitting anything can be very bad for your joints as people often hyperextend their joints.

you should ice your elbow and take ibuprofen (sp?) when it acts up. keep the swelling down.

watch the painkillers though. that pain is a warning sign of when not to push the joint any further.

Got it checked out today, another X-ray done, he doesnt see any fluid build-up and no apparent inter-joint damage, so whatever it is lies in the perimiter of the elbow. I have an MRI scheduled for next week, then a follow up after that. Kind of sucks doing all this, but I really really want to know what it is and if there's anything I can do about it. I hate not knowing things.

That really sucks about your elbow good luck w/ the MRI I hope they don't find anything to wrong. I hyperextended both of my knees playing soccer three years ago. I was really freaked out about it so I got a couple x-rays done only to find out that my cartlidge always pops under my knee caps. So when I lift anything too heavy w/ my legs my knees always crack and pop. The only thing my doctor did was send me to physical therapy for 6 months.

i just got back from the gym...chest today...i had to quit about halfway through cause it hurt so bad. Goddammit, when i get this MRI on Mon. they better actually start giving me some advice on what to do other than "take ibuprofen and ice it"... I have this gay elbow brace but it doesnt seem to be working much at all...i'm going to get one of those braces they use for tendonitis that put pressure on just your forearm...that might help a little better.

This fucking blows. I'm not going to stop lifting. Hopefully there is some way to permanently fix this, i've never really had surgery before, but if it would fix this, I think i might have to opt for it.
