So, I just had this idea for a Movie of the Week thread. It would be like Download of the Day, only once a week as movies are much longer than songs.

Instead of boulstering our music collections, this would perhaps introduce people to new movies which they might have not heard of before, or encourage them to see films they might not have gotten around to seeing before.

So, here are the pending rules:

One, and only one, movie is allowed to be recommended per week. To see when you last recommended a movie, please refer to your last post in a thread, look at the date, and add 7 to it!
Reasons for why you recommended a movie are highly encouraged, as long as it is contained within one post, and kept in a fairly good format.
Do not make posts simply to comment on a film, or anything else for that matter.  If you must, put your comments before your recommendation for the week (as is done often in the Download thread).
If you feel like going the extra mile, you can perhaps list the rating of the movie, the main leads, and whatnot, in order to better inform others who might wish to view this movie.

Well, let's get it started shall we?
Movie of the Week (Saturday, February 7):

The Pianist

This is a very gripping film starring Adrian Brody, who won (I believe) an oscar for best actor (and totally took over, stopping them from stopping him in his speech). As it was not in many theaters, and I hear about it very little in theaters, many of you might not have heard of this movie, or not bothered to view it. It's a little long, at 2 1/2 hours, but well worth it to me.

I don't watch movies very often, but Donnie Darko is probably my favorite movie. This movie should only be watched if you feel like thinking.

It's about a teenager named Donnie Darko who "escapes death" for the time being with the help of a time-traveling rabbit named Frank. After Frank helps Donnie, he tells him that the world will end in 28 days, blah hours, blah minutes, and blah seconds. During the time before the world ends lots of things happen to Donnie (duh).

I'm sure anyone whose seen the movie could've given a better description of it, but I was trying really hard not to give anything away. Chances are if you watch this movie once, you'll have to watch it again to understand it. There are lots of different "theories" about what this movie is really about, so this is a good movie if you like coming up with your own interpretations on what the creator of the movie wanted you to get from this.

Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story

It's got everything. Action, suspense, love, comedy, mystery, philosophy, and the best part is it's the real story of Bruce Lee's life. Oh it's all true, including his battle of his inner demons. Jason Scott Lee (no relation) plays Bruce and does a remarkable, remarkable job. This movie really has everything you need. Except explosions. But the excellent fights make up for that ten-fold.

Citizen Kane - This classis is THE reason movies are where they are today. The very first big Hollywood picture the give non-linear editing a whirl (pulp fiction is an example of this). This movie was decades before it's time because Orson Welles is a bad ass (he wrote, directed, and starred in this movie when he was 24). If you consider yourself any kind of film buff at all SEE THIS MOVIE! that is all.

Revenge of the Nerds

It's a classic. I just like the idea of forming your own fraternity so you can make the rules. Nonetheless, this movie is one of the greats, and it's even got more great ones to follow it.

Movie of the Week (Monday, February 16):

Pi

Starring nobody you've probably ever heard of, this is a film that delves into the mind of someone obsessed by the mathematics of the world. This is not your normal movie, but it is a great one.

MOTW:

The Last Samurai

Positives: Pimp Samurai fighting ninjas. Overall badass movie. Realistic.

Negatives: A little long. Not enough fine ass Asian hoes.

Alright, so when I first saw the previews for this movie my first thoughts were, "what the fuck? Tom Cruise in japan with a bunch of samurai, eat shit Mr. Moviephone." I had no interest in this movie whatsoever. Once it came out however; I heard nothing but good things. So, I went and saw it, thought it was badass.

If you like ninjas and swordfights, this movie is for you. If you liked Gladiator, this is 10 times better. The war scenes are incredible and, like I said before, the swordfights are intense. I'm definately getting this as soon as it comes out on DVD.

Vulgar

"Everybody loves a clown... some more than others"

This largely underground hit was made in 2000 by Bryan Johnson (written/directed) and put out by Kevin Smith's View Askew productions. Don't let Kevin's name give you the wrong idea, this is not the Clerks/Mallrats/Dogma type movie he's become known for... this is a brilliantly disturbing thriller/ crime drama with elements from many different genres... it even hearkens to the infamous "purty mouth" scene from 'Deliverance'.

This is the type of movie that makes you feel uneasy and kinda dirty after watching.

Brian O'halloran (Dante from 'Clerks') has the lead role.

My pick for this 7 days is going to be Reqiuem for a Dream. I'm sure rla128 has has heard of this as it's from the same director as Pi, Darren Arnovsky is absolutly fantastic. He was set to direct to newest Batman for a while (which would have brought back the darkness and grit that the last 3 movies were missing) But they gave the directing job to Christopher Nolan (of Momento fame, another movie you should see). Anyways before I went off on my tangent I was talking about Requiem for a Dream. This movie is a super dark movie about a couple of kids that start selling drugs. It's fantasic. check it out.

I'm going to say that Heat is my movie of the week. It's kind long, but there are alot of badasses in it (DeNiro, Pacino), and it's fucking good.

My movie of the week is Man on the Moon. I wathced it last night, and every time I do, I remember how sweet it is. It stars Jim Carrey and tells the story of the life of Andy Kaufman. According to people close to Kaufman, the story is very accurate. Even if you don't know anything about Kaufman, it's a great and sad story about this man's life. A definite must see.

Goodfellas

If you've seen it, no explanation is required (well... I guess this goes without saying, but anyway). If you havn't seen it, watch it. Watch this movie with friends, get to know people like Paulie and Tommy. I consider this film my 2nd favorite of all films (behind Pulp Fiction, of course).

Casino
Classic flick about the underworld of one of the biggest Vegas casinos. Up there with goodfellas, reservoir dogs, etc. With stars like DeNiro, Pesci, and Sharon Stone they make it a really good movie. Actually I think It was based on a true story. Highly recommended.

My movie of the week is a fairly obvious one. Everyone should see this movie. I just watched it on a big screen for one of my film thoery classes and let me tell ya...Fight Club rules. This movie never gets old.

Movie of the Week (Sunday, April 25th):

K-PAX

Received mediocre reviews, didn't do so well in the box-office, and is probably one of my most favorite movies. Starring Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey, this movie isn't exactly run of the mill.

Well, I like it. Also of note, if you get the dvd, WATCH THE ALTERNATE ENDING. It is 10x better, and makes me so mad at Hollywood for not keeping with this original ending.

Anyhoo, this is a great movie. Check it out.

Yeah rla, I put this movie really high on my list of 100 greatest movies and took some shit for it, but I thought it was great.

Pulp Fiction. An incredible story...see it if you haven't.
