X-Men: First Class is far and away the best X-Men movie to date.
Fassbennder is firmly establishing himself as a no-shit credible actor. His role in Inglorious Bastards was outshined by Christopher Waltz (Hans Landa) but still amazing ... the emotional depth he achieves as Magneto was frankly astounding for a comic book movie. James MacAvoy (Wanted) came into his own as Charles Xavier as well, was hard for me to imagine anyone other than Patrick Stewart in this role, but he pulled it off. The movie paced well, with good bits of appropriately placed action and a reasonably short montage of "recruiting" ... tie the X-Men into the Cuban bay of pigs crisis and you have yourself a solid film. |
