You just know that when the Financial Advisor analyzed her "predicament" he was probably thinking, "Hmm... after looking at her expenses I think I might know what's going wrong -- SHE'S A FUCKING IDIOT."
Seriously, who spends $150 per month on a cell phone bill? There are plans out there that offer unlimited minutes and texting for well under $100. Also, why in the world does she need a $120 per month internet and tv package? She could get basic cable and broadband for well under $75 -- or, better yet, cut the fucking cable-tv and get dial-up for $10 per month. Someone should find her phone number and give her a call. Once she's on the line, inform her that you have a solution to her problems. When she seems interested, tell her you just invented a time-machine that will allow her to go back in time and rectify her mistakes. Then she can teleport back to the present time and enjoy a debt-free life. The time machine will only cost her $2000. |

Her case is actually quite interesting to me. I've not seen anybody take this line of blame. Colleges are a financial institution looking out for their ass all the time, so this interests me.

People are such whiney bitches. Everyone thinks that if they go to college, they'll come out on the other side magically making a bunch of money and living the easy life. It doesn't work that way. Law school students are the worst about this.

yessir! I have one friend in law school that "expects to make 150k" a year as soon as he gets out of law school. Luckily he is debt free due to parents paying for everything.
My old roommate has the same mindset. I know he is leaving bsu w ~65k in debt with a masters. He thinks he's going to be rich if he goes to law school. He basically got through bsu being a mooch of other peoples work. |

Actually, law students, if they choose the right area, are pretty correct in assuming that they will make some insane money. Or at least they used to be before this year's crash. Of course you need to graduate from a top law school with a perfect GPA, top marks on the bar and some solid summer internships under your belt first.
Had one of our top partners at my firm give a lunch meeting today and he talked about how they are currently re-assessing their compensation packages because with the economic downturn they've realized that they are paying 26 year old grads with no real experience far more than clients are willing to pay for them. Despite these newbies having no perceived value to the client, the firm was paying them insane salaries just to attract talent. Not having quite the profits this last year that they have had before made them realize how foolish the industry was being, and he told us to expect the trend in the industry to swing towards more reasonable compensation in the future. It was actually incredibly refreshing to hear a top partner in the firm, who earns more in a year than anyone here will probably ever see in a decade, talk about how attorneys are wildly overpaid for their education and skills. He brought up how he was on a search committee for the president of Johns Hopkins University, and how they were going over the resumes of 150 of the greatest minds in the world, with the most amazing resumes imaginable, and the guy they selected out of that pile would be earning 60% of what the attorney who chose him made in a year. So, yeah, I can understand expecting to make some money with a top law degree. A masters from BSU, however, is worth about as much as a clever drawing on the back of a cocktail napkin. |

I think this was UB/sittinon's point; the people they were referring to probably aren't ^ those people. I would wager that this bracket is only a small portion of law students, being the ones who actually DESERVE to make lots of money, rather than, as f3lix so pointedly brought up in another thread, just some idiot who never should have gone to college in the first place, but mommy and daddy paid for them to get into school and now they think that they deserve some crazy amount of money for simply [partying], going to class, and doing homework.

Yes. But really, its the only universal measuring stick for "success." Money is important as it gives me the ability to do the things I want. But I don't know if I could truly get into a career field that didn't interest me or at the very least entertain me. I've become a lot less materialistic than when I was in college. I honestly only care about enjoying my free time and having fun. I like to have nice things, but I don't necessarily need flashy things. As long as I'm comfortable and have no financial worries, I'm content. I'm always looking for ways to better myself and become more marketable to make more $$$ but as you stated, its not everything. EDIT: damn, that sounds like a big fucking self pat on the back. I still suck. | |
