That's probably true, but the pictures taken by others in here are far better than your contribution, I don't recollect the title being 'OMG IM THE BEST PHOTOGRAPHER IN THE WORLD'

What would you classify as great photography, and why? Are you really classified to judge either way? Are any of us?

And Dent is right, nobody is claiming to be great photographers and most if not all of us have stated we are amateurs.

Hey, hey, hey, hey. Come on now, why don't you hey? This thread is about photography. So far, both of the main contributors to this thread have said that they are both just learning. That is license to post pictures and say, "hey, that's an awesome picture". No one has claimed to be some sort of genius-photographer. So, UB, stop being such a dick with your "these pictures suck" chime-in. Almost all of their pictures are better than any shit I've captured on film. Personally, I like the idea of photographing some awesome shit, but I don't have a camera that is decent by most definitions, so I am not one to contribute to this thread with pictures of my own.

So with that in mind, I'll offer any notes/suggestions that I can.

I am actually going to go with UB on this one in a sense. I am not criticizing anyone's photos unless requested to. One thing that has always bothered me about photography, and probably kept my from ever taking it seriously in classes, is how absolutely pretentious it is. I generally hate photographers simply because they feel the need to experience everything through a lens or a filter and define themselves by the images they have captured rather than the things they have done. I was looking at the state fair photography gallery and could not find one photo that I felt was "powerful" or "moving" in the entire building.

Photography has devolved with the advent of digital cameras and photoshop to the point where anyone can be a "photographer" without understanding the fundamental principles behind all of it. I occasionally go out and take some pictures with an old manual camera that I bought for a photojournalism class in college but never really care to show anyone my photos because they are generally nothing special.

Personally, I've never looked at a photo of a random object and been moved...at all. Sure, some pictures look cool, but that's where it ends.

What can be moving is the subject matter. Pictures of amazing things make for great photography. A photograph that captures the feelings of the person in it completely or one that wholly encompasses a plight or pleasure...that's a great picture.

A picture of the sky when the clouds look neat? Ya, that's cool and all, but it's just another picture imo.

Please note that this is a response (and agreement) to the DD's post above, not a "fuck you, you guys suck" to those posting pictures. I'm sure photography is a great hobby to those into it.

I also want to reiterate that I do dabble in photography as a hobby. Nothing I take with my digital camera do I consider "photography."

art is opinionated, so you can't really argue with it, and I completely agree with everyone else that photography has its snobs and shit, doesn't mean you can't appreciate it

I took these yesterday after going to a Tarantula exhibition, not my camera.
as soon as I set the enclosures up properly i'll try and get some more natural looking ones.

I'd like to go to beautiful places to take amazing pictures, but most of the time that I remember my camera i'm sitting at home doing jack shit.
I have a canon 500D which is pretty good for an amateur, too bad I don't know shit. Canon EOS 500D Digital SLR Camera - Canon UK
It does 1080P but I honestly don't see SLR's staying around long, there's a new type of compact camera that's 95% DSLR but 1/4 the size, and cheap.
