Nobody thinks college is some sort of lofty goal anymore.
Being in a position where I look at a lot of applications on a regular basis (we fire a lot of people) I can tell you that 99.7% of the time we will take someone who is in college with a schedule that we have to work around over someone who has never been to college and has thirty years of "retail experience." Keep in mind this is for a job that pays $8.00 an hour.

We've recently come to a "silent understanding" that nobody without a college degree can be promoted into management, regardless of ability. It's not an "official policy" but a "wink wink, nudge nudge" kinda thing.

But those of us who have gone through college have a much easier time minimizing its impact on where we are today than those who never went.
