You can't FORCE democracy at gun point. The people over there hate our fucking guts and there's nothing we can do about it.
It's not "Responsibl[e]" to end a war after to blowing up and smashing a place and then not paying Haliburton to go in and rebuild. All in the name of democracy.

Any war was over when w started paying the insurgents not to fight.

Repug, to your credit... weren't you the one saying earlier that people shouldn't be allowed to get abortion because it makes them too lazy and spoiled and doesn't teach them to be responsible for their actions?

While I don't think abortion should be made illegal (girls would be much less whorish... bad for us), I at least respect your general premise behind that argument.

Try as you might to piss all over any faith I have in you... I know you're capable of thinking intelligently on this matter. Let's cut the playground "go away" antics. Grow up.

You know, really all of us bickering on here doesn't matter. The fact is that I think the majority of Americans are tired of the Republican party, and fair or not, McCain is paying for it. Regardless of UB throwing a tantrum and stomping around in his underwear, we're in a Democracy and he only gets 1 vote.

The Republicans have nobody to blame but themselves.

That was a long time ago. I'm sure you'll be tickled to know that I've changed my opinion on the abortion issue. I think it's a necessary evil and women should be allowed to get them.

I think you over stress the idea of personal responsibility. It's good to be responsible, yes, but there also needs to be safety nets. That's why social security is a good thing - it's a way of making sure somebody doesn't fuck up so bad that they become homeless when they're too old to work.

Frankly, I think you underestimate the positive impact of taxes. In my opinion, contributing a little bit of your own money for the good of all ends up helping you in the long run anyway. For example...Lets say you pay taxes to help clean up your town. You're paying to help keep people off the streets, improve public transportation, and helping to shoulder some of the financial burdens caused by public education. You might not be in need of any of those things personally, but others are. Instead of letting everyone around you rot, you give a little, and suddenly less people are homeless, the streets are nicer, there's less crime, and more people are getting an education and less likely to go down the wrong road. The environment improves around you and thus you're benefiting others and yourself.

It seems like your response to this would be something like: Fuck those people, if they're too dumb and poor to go to school then they deserve to rot. I'll just move to some upper class neighborhood where I don't have to see those losers.

Excellent way to increase the number of technical jobs going to India and Sri Lanka.

Unfortunately, most people are pissed off about the money. I don't think anybody really gives a shit about about the wardrobe stuff and hussein as a middle name. The dyed in wool either way aren't going to change their mind.

Just curious UB, why do you care about this shit. Don't you stay with a roommate in an apartment? I suspect that you sir, are what we in Virginia refer to as the "nigger rich."

Novel idea, as I don't think I've ever heard anyone argue for teacher pay cuts or larger class sizes, but bad idea. It's one thing to tell adults to be responsible for themselves, but children is a different story. You can't have kid's be responsible for their parent's worthlessness much less expect them to start their own private school, many kids don't even have parents. Making our education system even more shittier and decreasing literacy it is not the answer to decreasing expenses or promote responsibility for ones actions. If anything it will just produce more bums who need to suck off the governments teat.

And you can't deny the importance of early school years and elementary school teachers... these are the people that teach kids how to fucking read! Public education is one of the most important factors in making a country successful!!

You talking about all those lazy irresponsible Enron workers who lost all their retirement? Or do you mean all the close to retirement age people worked hard and invested in places like Bear Stearns, just to get fucked?

Please explain.

ID: I'm not going to try to convince everyone here that cutting teachers salaries makes sense. I can spot an impossible battle when I see one. But as we end that note, something to chew on: why not decrease spending significantly on public education and with the money we save from doing so, give underprivileged kids vouchers and tuition to attend private schools? It would be a long, difficult transition to such a system during which some children might be "left behind"... but I think it's interesting food for thought.

Repug: I certainly realize that taxes are necessary and valuable to making a society efficient. We've just gone way, way too far. Let's throttle back and only spend when it is efficient to do so! How about an even more democratic system where people vote whether or not we spend on certain issues? Eliminate many broad, Federal spending programs and let people vote on how they want to spend tax dollars in their local government. That's the way this country was supposed to work!!

Hfam: Mark Zuckerberg sleeps on a mattress on the floor. What's your point? I'm like literally the opposite of "nigger rich". I actually don't have a particularly significant amount of liquid wealth, but if I could sell the value I have tied up in internet businesses, it would be a fantastically large amount... especially for a 24 year old who was born into no money.

Blonde: Yes, I've used Barack's middle name to bash him here and there. And other people have said the main reason they're not voting for McCain because he's "too old and will die in office". Sometimes you answer stupidity with stupidity. It's not right... but yes, I'm guilty of doing it.

I'm glad to see your situation has changed from yesterday. From your blog:

Vote Obama: Bite the Hand That Feeds You

My roommate and employer, Michael (the "M" in WM Media), came home today from an uncharacteristically long walk.

Just to make sure I got it right. Mark sleeps on a mattress on the floor. You have a daytime job where Michael is your boss and your maybe, maybe not roomate, but you could cash out right now?

Something to think about: Sweden has some of the highest taxes in the industrialized world, and they also have one of the highest standards of living, life expectancy, and literacy rates, while having some of the lowest crime rates in the industrialized world.

UB the plumber:

Also considering, if you can't cash out the value of the internet businesses, and have not much liquid, that kinda makes you what the gentry in the Commonwealth call a "broke ass nigger." Which in that case, being so opposed to a 3 percent shift that starts AFTER $250,000 in income (not sales, accounts, or gross receipts) that doesn't effect you at all, would not that make you what we call a "stupid nigger"?

I'll claim well over a quarter million worth of income on my 2008 tax return income because of poker.

But your ramblings bring up an interesting point I'd like to make... one that ID, GWB, and ProfessorNumber are savvy enough to understand: even if I wasn't making $250,000+ a year (actually now it's $200,000... welcome to the slippery slope of having a socialist running your country), I still wouldn't want people making that much to be taxed to death.

Unlike most of you Young Socialists around here... I actually want to get rich!! And even if I wasn't rich now (as ID, ProfessorNumber, and to a lesser extent GWB are not), I still understand that I don't want to screw over the type of person I'm striving to become! That being... a wealthy person!

It's fun (and more importantly, easy!) to get all worked up about abortion and gay rights... but none of those things really matter if the foundation of the country's wealth has rotted away.

I agree with this. A lot. But if you follow what the candidates have been saying, while neither is proposing exactly this, Obama's is a lot more near this ideal than McCain.

So you're saying, because of Obama's proposed tax increase (OMG IT MEANS HE'S A SOCIALIST WATCHOUT HE'S A FINANCIAL MARXIST) for the 250k crowd, you will no longer be able to become wealthy?

Obama is punishing wealth. He's saying "we'll take the money from those evil wealthy people and give it to the rest of us." I would rather be the one to decide where my money gets to go (jobs for my friends and family, issues that I care about like education reform and keeping amphetamine prescriptions out of the hands of children, etc). The less money the government allows me to have, the less freedom I have in choosing how I wish to change the world with the fruits of my labor.

People focus on this 250k thing, but if you look at his plan the two brackets that are getting the biggest tax increases are the people making 600,000 to 2.87 million (8.7% increase) and the people making above 2.87 million (11% or so increase). These people represent the top 1%, and the top .1% of the population. They'll be taxed a little more for the good of all, and still be wealthier than 95% of the population. Woes them.

As opposed to taking the money from the ignorant masses who aren't rich and are simply there to work in the factories and do the heavy lifting? Maybe you will do great things with your fortune, maybe you won't, but it seems to me that the vast majority of people who grow wealthy don't. What do you have to say for the rest of the people who are in the higher tax brackets? Nobody likes getting money taken away, and maybe this sounds bad from a financial standpoint, but better the top 5% than the 95%. As i've said before and i'll say it again, if they don't want to deal with the taxes and be rich/create businesses more and bring themselves down to a lower tax bracket, i'll be happy to take their place.

Cory. You're not thinking clearly here. You aren't rich right now, so you're a good person. So right now you're thinking, "Yeah, when I'm rich, I'm gonna help people." But the moment you become rich, you'll become evil. Everyone knows that is how it works. So instead of wanting to help family and friends, you'll want to build a death-ray or a freeze-ray or some sort of other dangerous ray. Do you see where I'm going with this? Obama wants to help prevent people from being evil. It's quite obvious.

I think that's a sad characterization of wealthy people. Look at Warren Buffet who amassed a fortune of $40 billion while continuing to live in the same house he bought in Nebraska in the 1960s. He donated $30 billion to charity last year.

Keep in mind also, people only get rich by giving others what they want. You think Buffet got all the money by exploiting people? No! He got it by creating efficiencies in society that caused these "ignorant masses" of yours to willfully give him their money in exchange for things like affordable furniture and automobile insurance.

Warren Buffet is a HUGE exception to the rule, and you know it. I'd love nothing more than to see you turn out as the next Warren Buffet, then after all this blows over we can be buds again and I can nail sluts on your companies' yacht.

I always feel the need to break up the tension. This should help.

edit: oh shit i didn't see the end of that video LOL. well maybe it won't break the tension after all

You're right. I'm convinced. Let's lower taxes on the super rich, cut education for those filthy non-rich people, lower the minimum wage (because they're lazy and stupid and don't deserve a lot of money) and never end the war. While we're at it, we can teach intelligent design in science classes, try to over turn Roe v Wade, give more money to the military industrial complex, and make sure no two men or two women who love each other EVER have the same rights that the rest of us do.

Four more years! Four more years!
