I propose a board-wide avatar theme: a picture of your favorite horse who has won the Triple Crown.

My selection is the 1935 winner Omaha.

Omaha was the son of the 1930 Crown winner Gallant Fox. He lived for 24 years after winning the Crown and was buried in Nebraska. The land on which he was buried was later given to the University of Nebraska-Omaha who built a facility on the grounds. Omaha is buried in the ground under a home economics classroom.

Three Kentucky Derby champions are third great grandsons of Omaha.

I cannot tell you one horse that has won the triple crown (other than Omaha now) ... I feel this topic was chosen to the exact opposite effect of what the thread title states.

I didn't know anything about any TC winner either, DDT. That's what made it kind of a fun idea: a chance to learn about something through a little research and then share that with the rest of the board.

Mr. WarTrotter 1962-1965

While Mr. WarTrotter never actually won a Triple crown, he became famous for getting 3rd place four years in a row, and was the only horse to ever have done so. However, his valor is not without controversy. In 1963 he was favored to win the triple crown by a longshot. He was a horseheadlengths ahead of all other racers the entire race until a horse by the name of Longsfellow made physical contact with Mr. WarTrotter and he tripped up and lost at least One and One halves horselength to finish third. Cementing his place in history.

UB I'm pretty dissapointed with your suggestion for 2 reason:

1) There are only 11 options possible. We have more than 11 active posters and your catatory is extremely selective.

2) It's not that interesting. I couldn't have named a single of these guys. I don't dislike horseracing at all, but come on, do you actually expect most nubblites to be able to name more than 2-3 tripple crown winners?

I would have considered "favorite horse" even a pretty narrow topic, but would have gone along with it. "Favorite of the 11 tripple crown winning horses," is a catagory I will not be participating in.

I agree with FC. I think the idea is fantastic but going along with anything more accessible/interesting. I don't hate horse racing, I just couldn't give a single fuck about it and learning about it will do me no good whatsoever.

Like Mr. Mistoffelees horse, my horse, Julia Roberts has not actually won the triple crown. But she has worked as an actress in 47 movies and produced half a dozen more.

Seattle Slew. The baddest of the modern day horses won the triple while previously undefeated. Heard he sired thousands of offspring. A true badass.

What's interesting is that the triple crown in general, and the Kentucky Derby in particular, are not truly representative of the best horses at any given time, since the horses are rather young.

The Breeder's cup classic is really the better test, which is why Zenyatta is not as well known, but probably a better horse than any of the recent ones that have put on good showings in the triple crown races.
