I bought a suit when I was a freshman in high school. I can't imagine not owning one and being a college student. I can understand not having a tux I guess. I typically just wear my uniform to formal events so the tux doesn't get much use anymore.
Yes there are other places with brotherhood. I'm much closer with my flightmates from boot camp than anybody else but I still hold that it is not the same as the brotherhood in a Fraternity. Seeing as one of us is a member of both and the other isn't I'd say I have a greater understanding of what I'm talking about. |

Since the term frat is directed toward Fraternities in the Greek system that is what I was referring to. But I'll rephrase it. The brotherhood in a college Greek fraternity system is something that no non-greek could understand. Which is why non-greeks refer to them as frats and most greeks don't.

Thats the whole point of the pledge process and initiation. To teach a non-greek about being a brother in a fraternity and what it means. You can't understand it until you go through it. The process is secret and even if it weren't simply typing it on the internet would not give you any appreciation for its meanings.

Mr. Hellcat, help me out with this. If this Greek letter brotherhood thing is something only somebody who's been through it can understand, why join? Do the pledges have any understanding of what they are joining or maybe more appropriate, why they are joining?
I'm really sure not sure how Greek letter fraternities are different from other secret societies. Many of which pre-date Greek letter clubs. |

Most Greek societies actually take a lot of their roots from the european secret societies. The parrallels between my fraternity at what I've been able to find out about the Freemasons are pretty incredible.
Most pledges do it because of the reputation. And we tell them at Rush how worthless college life is if you aren't in a fraternity and how only the losers don't pledge and how we're the best one on campus so they should join ours, etc. Rush is basically a week or so of us bullshitting freshman so they pledge. Then we weed out the ones who really belong and really get it throughout the semester during the pledge process. By the time its over, the ones who are left and get initiated understand. The others usually have no idea why they got cut and that's usually the root of the problem. |

Not familiar with Greek fraternities outside of a college. Maybe that is the better way to phrase that. Still, Where else are they? Know of other organizations, like masons etc., just not Greek letter social fraternities. Clue me in on this.

You have to understand what fraternities are like at Ball State to understand the hatred we hold for fraternities...but you don't go here...so you couldnt POSSIBLY comprehend...

If they're like that fraternities at CU Boulder (where my sister is) I can understand. 90% of them are cokeheads which is something I also think is retarded.

I never saw those two movies before deciding I didn't want anything to do with a frat. Also, it should be noted that seeing those movies should do nothing but make me want to join a frat, since they're incredible films.
MTV is for dumbasses. I based my judgement off of the words of people I trusted. This blended with the fact that when I came to college, I saw a bunch of guys that I was able to instantly identify as "total pricks" (we all know the kind I'm talking about) who were recruiting people to join their bullshit fraternity. I'm not the type of person to jump through hoops for a bunch of illiterate assholes on trust funds just so I can wear their fucking T-shirts and wash their fucking floors. If you want to be a bitch, then it sounds like you're on the right track. The Army and a fraternity are certainly bitch-worthy organizations. -UB |

But the army is more respectable, seeing as how they're actually doing something beneficial for the country. I can't back you up on that one.
However, I can vouch for UB not being the MTV watching/mimicking type AT ALL. |
