Cab if that is you, I'd like to come clean. I've decided to not follow your advice at all and will be going to law school after all. I'm going to SF check out Hastings tomorrow. Also I'll probably get a man chowder bread bowl. CLAM chowder I meant, CLAM.

I still disagree with you on your last point, Blonde. Obama apparently disagrees with you now too as evidenced by his turnaround stance on small businesses. What you haven't yet realized is that my low-tax on upper-class position is better for the middle class than your stance. I know your intentions are good, but you're not realizing how much the freedom to get rich is good for everyone, including the poor.

Oh and calling it now: big mistake going to law school, Ironic. That career choice is a giant bubble. Everyone thinks it's the guaranteed route to $100k/year, a hot wife, and a big house. There's just simply not that muchdemand for lawyers. People are coming out with law degrees and working a miserable document-scowering job 60 hours a week for $65k a year... a very miserable $65k.
You've been warned. |

I've done an ass ton of research on it already so I know what I'm getting into. The $100k+ jobs are definitely available (especially in a market like SF), they just largely depend on where you go to law school, and where you rank in your class. Hastings and UC Davis are ranked 35ish and 50ish in the country (fairly respectable), but are located where I want to practice. With my grades and LSAT practice top ten schools are certainly not out of my reach (Columbia, Chicago, NY, and Northwestern are very reasonable, and Yale, Harvard, Stanford, and Berkely are a stretch). All of that is fairly irrelevant though because in order to earn those $100K+ (it's actually quite a bit more than that even your first year out), you have to work in Big Law and pretty much sell your soul to its big swinging dick and worship the almighty billable hour, and I'm just not that interested in that. Government work pays shittier to be sure but the hours are much better and end up paying near as well after you put a few years in. I don't have to worry about student loans because A) I'm awesome, B) I have money, so I don't mind putting in a little entry level work clerking for a judge or something that will later open up better opportunities. Add to that the fact that I already own my house and car outright, have $0 debt, and 65K isn't really that bad of a deal.
Yes there are too many lawyers because it's too easy to get into law school. It's not easy to get into a top law school though, and people scowering documents for 65K a year didn't go to one. Ouch Blonde, California is awesome. |

I ultimately decided that sacrificing my 30's for it wasn't worth it. If I'd started the process when I was 18 like I should have, it wouldn't have been too bad to finish at 30. But since I started at 26, and initially had to work full time during undergrad, I wouldn't finish until I was about 40. I was going back and forth between law and medicine for a long time before I made my decision.
